Phone book cover features watercolor of downtown

The image on Comporium Communication's new phone book being distributed this week features a watercolor painting of downtown Rock Hill by recent Rock Hill High School graduate Emilia Munoz-Bowman.

Munoz-Bowman, a freshman at the University of South Carolina, won first place in Comporium's art contest to choose an image for the phone book cover. In addition to having her art on the cover, she and her high school art teacher, Lorne Brandt, each received $600.

Comporium spokesman Glenn McFadden said the art contest was open to all middle and high school students in York County.

The other high school honorees were, second place, Taylor Purser, Northwestern High, instructor, Kim Grant; third place, Nicole Bronola, Northwestern High, instructor, Jessica Calloway; and honorable mention, Kirsten Vaeth, Northwestern, instructor, Calloway.

The middle school winners were, first place, Cierra Hunter Campbell, Clover Junior High, instructor, Robin Shealy; second place, Kathryn Booth, St. Anne Catholic School, instructor, Pat Bright; third place, Kendall Juell, Springfield Middle School, instructor, Laura Arecco; and honorable mention, Ryan Scott, Shiloh Christian Academy (home school), instructor, Jennifer Scott.

The Arts Council of York County helped with the contest publicity and selected an independent panel of judges for the contest. Debra Heintz, executive director of the council, said more than 40 works were submitted by students across the area.

McFadden said Comporium is continuing to enhance its phone book and online directory. The new book holds two new sections: a home improvement guide and a wedding guide.

McFadden is advising customers who want to dispose of their old phone directories to recycle them. “We are providing outside bins at our offices on Main Street and Cherry Road in Rock Hill and in front of Fort Mill's Tom Hall Street location,” he said.
