Take strides to make a difference locally

The fourth annual Rock Hill Great Strides 10K Walk for Cystic Fibrosis will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cherry Park. The event will take place rain or shine.

Sign-ups begin at 9 a.m. There will be live music, children's crafts, food, face painting and more. All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. For details or to make a donation, call 843-722-6460 or visit www.cff.org/great_strides/ kerrimarks.

These other fundraisers are planned

Senior Helpers of Fort Mill will sponsor a team for the annual Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk, which will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill. Team members are asked to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association of South Carolina. Registration will be at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. The memory walk has raised more than $260 million since 1989. For details, to register or to make a donation, visit www.seniorhelpers.com.

Temple Baptist Church will host a yard sale at 7 a.m. Saturday at 281 Cel-River Road, Rock Hill. A car wash will be available; hot dogs will be $5 per plate. A plate includes two hot dogs, a bag of chips and a drink.

Boy Scout Troop 366 of York will sponsor a fundraiser from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lauren Pines subdivision on S.C. 161. The morning session will include breakfast and a hot-air balloon ride. The evening session will include dinner and a hot-air balloon ride. Tickets are $10 per person. Lake Wylie Riversweep

is planned for Oct. 3

Lake Wylie's Riversweep will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 at the Buster Boyd Bridge Public boat landing. Gloves, bags and Riversweep volunteer T-shirts will be available.

Winthrop common book

events this month

Winthrop University organizers have planned a semester of events to promote the Depression-era theme of coping with poverty in this year's common book, “Growing Up” by journalist Russell Baker.

The city of Rock Hill recently declared September as Common Book Month, and area book clubs are encouraged to read the book. University officials have said they would be glad to help lead discussions.

Upcoming in the series are these events:

A 7 p.m. Tuesday lecture, “Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover: Examining Your Culture Prespective” in Plowden Auditorium, with Shebby Neely-Goodwin and Justine Gradillas, both in social work, and Katie Garypie in residence life.

A behind-the-scenes discussion on the Winthrop performance “You Can't Take It With You,” at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in 204 Owens Hall with Andrew Vorder Bruegge and Janet Gray, both in theater and dance.

The performance “You Can't Take it With You,” which will be be presented Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 in Johnson Theater. Tickets are on sale online.

A lecture, “The Economic and Psychological Impact of Unemployment” at 11 a.m. Sept. 29 in Barnes Recital Hall, with speakers Gary Stone in economics and Tracy Griggs in psychology.

Eagle Cinema will present common book cinematic connections on campus cable Channel 20. Movies include “Cinderella Man,” “The Color Purple,” “Of Mice and Men” and “Avalon,” as well as a movie about an earlier common book, “Into the Wild.” The speakers are Howard Seidler in residence life and Jeannie Weil in sociology.
