Sorority walking for breast cancer awareness

The Chester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host a one-mile walk in honor of breast cancer awareness through downtown Chester at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The walk will start at 238 Gadsden St. Donations can be made on site and will be given to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation in efforts to research breast cancer.

To donate, please mail a check made out to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for breast cancer memorial to P.O. Box 743 Chester, SC 29706.

These local groups have meetings and other events planned:

Sterling Lodge 344 and Living Beauty Temple 709 will hold its annual prayer breakfast at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Elk Home, 1644 Ogden Road, Rock Hill. A $6 donation is requested. Bishop B.R. Wilson will perform the memorial service. Details, call Gwen Finley at 803-322-3344.

Move Fort Mill Forward will present its fourth annual Art on Main festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on Main Street in Fort Mill. Trolley tours will be available and guests can visit a Civil War military encampment in Confederate Park. Pottery making, basket weaving, crocheting and knitting will be demonstrated. Entertainment will be provided by The Cherry Road Barbershop Quartet, dancers from Encore Dance Studio, middle school choral groups, high school band combos and singer Julia Matthews. Members of the Chester High School class of 1977 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pizza Hut on J.A. Cochran Bypass in Chester. Class members are asked to attend. Raffle tickets, stubs and money are due at the meeting for the drawing.

The Western York Performing Arts Company is seeking new members to perform in this year's play, “The Blessed and Soulful Nutcracker.” Anyone ages 5 and older who is interested in dance is invited to attend an informational meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The Yorkville Players will present “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York. The Rock Hill Community Theatre will open its production of “Moonlight and Magnolias” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 240 E. Black St., Rock Hill. This comedy takes place in Hollywood 1939. In the show, sroducer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, “Gone With the Wind,” and brought in two friends to help him rewrite a new screenplay.
