Friday art auction to benefit Winthrop award

Gallery Up will present the Winthrop University silent art auction from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Gettys Center, second floor, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill.

The auction will feature the artwork of Winthrop University students, faculty and alumni in a variety of mediums, available at a variety of prices. Works will include photography, painting, printmaking, jewelry and sculpture.

Auction items will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, with the auction from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Winners must be present at 9:30 p.m. to claim their art. The event is free and light hors d'ouevres will be served.

Partial proceeds from the auction will be used to create a purchase award for the Winthrop 2008 Undergraduate Exhibiton. For details, call 980-5355 or visit visit www.galleryup.com.

Winthrop art exhibits focus on gender, video

Winthrop University will host the following new art exhibits:

• Performing Gender, Friday through March 27 in Rutledge and Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Galleries. A winter reception will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Rutledge Gallery. This exhibition, a sampling of artwork and photographs from around the region, addresses works that graphically represent the body and comment on gender identity. It includes mature subject matter.

• DVD Invitational, Friday through March 6 in McLaurin Hall's Edmund D. Lewandowski Student Gallery. The exhibit features video art works from students in the Department of Design and the Department of Fine Arts.

The exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. The gallery will be closed March 17 to 21 for spring break.

Africa Alive, family day are planned at MYCO

The Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill, will have the following events:

• Africa Alive, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23. Visitors will learn about Africa and its part in American history through storytelling, music, crafts, activities and planetarium programs. West African drum and dance group Borenya will perform at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Vendors will sell African and African-American merchandise. Ethiopian dish tasting will be in the Elephant Hall. Admission is $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 youth ages 4 to 17 and free for ages 3 and younger. CHM members receive a $2 discount.

• Family Discovery Day, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and School's Out Discovery Day, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 18. Curators will demonstrate how bark, snow, leaves and water are created for exhibits. On Saturday, learn about animal tracks and meet the museum's corn snake. On Feb. 18, make a turtle rattle and meet the museums's turtles. Admission is $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 youth ages 4 to 17 and free for CHM members and children ages 3 and younger. For details, call 329-2121.

Black history talent will be on Saturday

The youth missionary department of Tabernacle AME Zion Church will host its third annual black history talent showcase at 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, 320 Old Friendship Road, Rock Hill.

Participants of any age are needed for song, dance, poetry and art. Admission is free. For details, call Shonika or Crystal Burns, (803) 524-1872.

Wild game events to feature cooking, deer grunting

Southside Baptist Church is having its sixth annual wild game supper at 6 p.m. Saturday in the family life center, 1229 S. Anderson Road, Rock Hill. The event is for men only. Participants are asked to bring a cooked wild meat and dress in outdoor gear.

Speaker will be evangelist Chuck Coffey, a bow and turkey hunter. There will be a cooking contest, deer grunting and turkey and duck calling demonstrations, storytelling and door prizes. For details, call 324-0627.

Paddle trip, waterfall hike are planned by Rock Hill PRT

Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism has planned the following trips:

• Winter Waterfall Hike, Feb. 23. A one-day trip to South Mountains State Park near Shelby, N.C., for a two-mile hike and picnic lunch. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch, snacks and water. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Cost is $20 per person and pre-registration is required.
