The sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Thousands of books will be for sale, priced at $1 per inch, measuring the height of the book stack. Videos, audio books and surplus library equipment will be for sale.

Saturday is half-price day; books are 50 cents per inch, small paperbacks are 25 cents each and videos are 50 cents.

The Friends sponsor the children's and teen's summer reading programs and other library programs that are not included in the regular library budget. For details, visit www.yclibrary.org or call (803) 981-5837.

Shag lessons offered at St. John's church

Shag lessons will be offered at St. John's Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Classes will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and May 14, 21 and June 4 in the St. John's Center. A shag practice session will be at 7:30 p.m. May 28 with no lesson. Richard Cousins, a professional dance instructor, will teach the series of lessons and shag practice session. Cost is a one-time donation of $20 per person to the children and youth building. Classes are for beginners and experienced dancers with some intermediate steps offered. No partner is required. Area fundraisers include dinners, golf tournament

These area organizations are having fundraisers:

• The South Pointe Choral Booster Club will have a hot dog dinner before the spring concert at 5 p.m. May 15 in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5 and must be pre-purchased by calling Beverly Laney at 980-2172 or by e-mailing her at blaney@rock-hill.sc.k12.us. Proceeds benefit the choral program.

• The second annual Special Olympics golf tournament will be at 1 p.m. May 31 at Pinetuck Golf Course. Hughes Auto and Truck Parts, Inc. of York, Chester and Lancaster is sponsoring the event. Food will be served after the tournament. Proceeds benefit York, Chester and Lancaster Special Olympics. Sponsorship donations are due by May 22. Make checks payable to Special Olympics Area 11 and mail to Hughes Auto and Truck Parts, Inc., 1209 E. Main St., Rock Hill. • The MetroCarolina chapter of the Friends of the National Rifle Association will have its annual fundraising banquet and auction from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Magnolia Room in Laurel Creek, 4017 Laurel Creek Drive, Rock Hill. Events include raffles, live and silent auctions and more. Prizes include rifles, shotguns, pistols, decorative prints and statues, hunting and shooting accessories and collector knives. Dinner tickets are $30 and include a Lowcountry boil. Sponsor packages are $250 and include two dinner tickets, a Teddy Roosevelt statue, sponsor hat, lapel pin and window decal. • The third annual golf scramble for Special Olympics will be Thursday at Pinetuck Golf Course, 2578 Tuckaway Road, Rock Hill. Lunch and registration will be at 11:30 a.m. and shotgun start will be at 12:30 p.m. The event is captain's choice format. Cost is $80 per player, including entry fee, lunch, cart, prizes, dinner and auction. Additional dinner/auction tickets are $10 per person. Prizes include top three teams net and gross, long drive and closest to pin contests, hole-in-one contest on every hole and $10,000 hole-in-one prize. To enter, return completed entry form with payment. The field is limited to the first 100 entries. The event benefits the Special Olympics of York, Chester and Lancaster Counties. • The second annual Sink One for Cystic Fibrosis charity disc golf tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m. May 17 at Winthrop Lake. Innova is sponsoring the tournament and proceeds benefit cystic fibrosis. A player meeting/sign in will be at the shack at 9 a.m. Firebonz All-American Barbecue and Grill will serve lunch from noon to 2 p.m. for all paid participants. Round II begins after lunch and a trophy presentation will follow. All ages and skill levels may participate. Loner Bill will play live music. • The Oneppo Brothers band will perform from 7 to 11 p.m. May 22 at the Larne building, 103 N. Main St., Clover. Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Club charities. • Teams and sponsors are being sought for the 2008 United Way of York County golf benefit to be Tuesday at Waterford Golf Club, 1900 Clubhouse Drive, Rock Hill. All proceeds benefit the United Way of York County. The event is a captain's choice format. Foursomes are $500 and hole sponsorships start at $125. • Thrift Store Ministries of Western York County, 31 N. Congress St., York, will have a buy one get one free sale on all ladies pants and blue jeans this week. Coffee mugs are also buy one get one free. The store has recently been renovated and donations are being accepted for furniture, appliances, clothing and other items. Volunteers are needed. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The store is closed Wednesday. • Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 211 Marvin Road, Indian Land, will have a barbecue fundraiser, bake sale, silent auction, and car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Barbecue tickets are $7 per plate and are available at the church office and at the door. Car show entry fee is $10 and includes a ticket for the barbecue plate. Newcomers, bridge group will gather this week

The following groups will meet:

• The Newcomers Club of York County will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 14 at the Waterford Golf Club, 1900 Clubhouse Road, Rock Hill. Officers will be elected and the club will have its annual charity donation presentation to three local charities. A choice of two lunches will be available, grilled chicken for $10 or a bow-tie pasta meal for $13.50. The club is open to all women new to York County. • The Rock Hill Civitan Club will hold its bi-monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mary's Cafe, 1349 Firetower Road, Rock Hill. Speaker will be Blake T. Family program has science class, more

The York school district parent education/family literacy program, 37 Pinckney St., York, will have the following free events:

• Tuesday, a cougar cub class at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., which includes developmentally appropriate activities for parents and children to participate in together.

• May 29, cougar club science night at 6 p.m. Participants will do science activities.

• June 10, storytime/cougar cub class at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Dina from the library will share stories and songs.

Soup kitchen opens this week in York

Grace and Mercy Kitchen Ministry will have a soup kitchen from noon to 1:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday this week at Wesley United Methodist Church, 110 W. Jefferson St., York. Clover preschool has registration

Health screenings offered at two area sites

The following health events are planned:

• Cholesterol, blood sugar and prostrate screenings will be from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center, 325 Rawlinson Road, Rock Hill. Screenings are $10 for cholesterol, $3 for blood sugar and $10 for prostate, and free for blood pressure. The Upper Palmetto YMCA, Rock Hill Aquatics Center and Piedmont Medical Center are sponsoring the event. The event is open to the public and appointments are not necessary.
