Rock Hill historical marker will be dedicated
A dedication ceremony for the Black Plantation / Hampton Rally historical marker, honoring former South Carolina Gov. Wade Hampton and Alexander Templeton Black, will be at 11 a.m. today in the Hampton Street parking lot between Main and Black streets in Rock Hill.
The free public ceremony honors the contributions of Black, one of the founders of Rock Hill. Black's plantation originally spanned the area of current downtown Rock Hill. With his remarkable business savvy, he made a large impact on building Rock Hill into the city it is today.
Speakers will include historian Louise Pettus, York Mayor Eddie Lee, Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols and York County Councilman Buddy Motz. For details, call 329-2121. The event is sponsored by the city of Rock Hill, in conjunction with the Culture and Heritage Museums.
Realtors to honor those how served
The Piedmont Regional Association of Realtors will have an appreciation reception honoring service men and women from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Palmetto Room, 135 E. Main St., downtown Rock Hill. The event will kick of the 2008 community service project, which is adopting a military unit leaving for the Middle East in late May.
The unit, based in Columbia, has many members from the Piedmont area. The association will collect monetary donations and items for care packages to be sent to soldiers. The program will feature a soldier who served in World War II.
Suggested items needed for the care packages are shaving cream, razors and soap; plastic-covered soap dishes; shower shoes or Crocs; chapstick; hand-held games; other types of games; movies; sunblock; Crystal Light iced tea powder; gum; blankets; battery alarm clocks; and batteries.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Finger foods and beverages will be served. Local caterers have donated their time and food. The caterers include Melanie Rowe and Old Town Bistro. For details, call Adrienne Guyett at (803) 322-7929.
Flag disposal ceremony scheduled by VFW
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9138 Fort Mill will have a flag disposal ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday at 1442 Harris Road, Fort Mill. Torn or damaged flags may be dropped off before Saturday. The ceremony is open to the public.

May week event to be hosted by local sorority
The Chester alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will host May Week at noon on Saturday at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, 807 Darby Road, Chester. Speaker will be Leah Moody, daughter of Rep. Boyd Hill center hosting open house
Boyd Hill Recreation Center, 1165 Constitution Blvd., Rock Hill, will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Information will be available about recreation and leisure opportunities, such as art classes and senior and therapeutic programs. On display will be handmade art, including quilts, porcelain dolls, crochet items, flower arrangements and more. Some handmade items will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit Area 11 Special Olympics. The Rock Hill Area Shag Club will have a dance at 8 p.m. Saturday at Checkers, 1685 Katy Lane, Fort Mill. Brad Crawford will play beach and boogie music. No cover charge.
NASCAR-themed event planned by shaggers
The Lancaster Shag Club will have a NASCAR theme party at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lancaster Moose Lodge, 200 Moose Drive, Lancaster. Roy Childress of Burlington, N.C. will DJ. Participants are asked to bring hors d'ouevres. Activities include a cash bar, 50/50 drawing, smoke-free dance floor and more. Admission is $5 for any shag member and $8 for guests.
