It's all happening at the museum

The Culture and Heritage Museums will have the following events:

n A tour of the archives, from 11 to 11:45 a.m. July 5 at the Historical Center of York County at McCelvery Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York. Participants will look at how the archives stores records and resources donated from the public. The free public event is part of the ancestors and archives series. For details, call 684-3948.

n Battle of Huck's Defeat, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 12 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13. Three significant battles of the Revolutionary War in the Carolina backcountry will be re-enacted. During the event, see how soldiers and civilians of the Carolina Piedmont survived the war. Activities include music, firearms demonstrations, talks by noted experts and examples of camp life. Youth can explore the children's encampment area and play with historic toys and games, participate in military drills and take part in a Revolutionary War camp. Cost is $10 adults; $8 seniors; $5 youth ages 4 to 17; and free for children three and younger. CHM members will receive $2 discount.

Photos by Joel Nichols on display at Winthrop

The work of photographer Joel "Nick" Nichols will be on display at Winthrop University's Dacus Library during June. The exhibit of 15 photographs, which spans the decades from the 1960s to the present, includes campus scenes, students and theater productions. The exhibit is free and open to the public by appointment by calling 323-2131.

Nichols has been Winthrop University's photographer since 1962. A permanent display of his work is exhibited at Winthrop's Joynes Hall and at his alma mater, Erskine College.

Nichols is also a graduate of the U.S. Army photography school at Fort Monmouth, N.J., and is a third-generation photographer, learning skills from his father and grandfather, who were both professional photographers.

Nichols has received six honor awards from the University Photographers Association of America for excellence in university photography. His work has appeared in numerous magazines and scholarly journals.

Develop creative writing at York Tech

A free creative writing workshop by Martha Macdonald, English instructor at York Technical College, will be at noon Thursday in the York Technical College Library room 100, 452 Anderson Road, Rock Hill. Macdonald will read passages from her recently published novel, "Psaltery at White Oaks."

Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Light refreshments will be served. The event is open to the community. For details, call Macdonald at 981-7341 or e-mail her at mmacdonald@yorktech.com.

Clover fall festival needs entertainers

Entertainers are needed for the Clover Fall Festival on Sept. 20. Singers, dancers, groups or other performers interested should call Gina Bruce at Clover Parks and Recreation at (803) 222-9493.

All acts are subject to approval and no one will be allowed to perform without registering. There is no cost to participate. Registration deadline is Aug. 30. The festival will raise money for underprivileged children.

PMC clinic needs local bilingual volunteers

Bilingual volunteers are needed for Palmetto Volunteers in Medicine, a free clinic that will be opening in the fall across from Piedmont Medical Center. The clinic will serve uninsured and qualified York County residents. To volunteer call Barbara Guidry at 325-2537 or e-mail bguidry@ci.rock-hill.sc.us.

Lancaster humane society needs foster care

The Humane Society of Lancaster is seeking foster homes for dogs, cats and special needs pets. The shelter's foster homes are currently over crowded and unable to take in more animals. To volunteer, call (803) 285-5900.

Falcon Cheerleaders hold meet, greet event

A meet and greet for the 2008 Falcon Cheerleaders will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex picnic area, 337 E. Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. The event is for any new or returning cheerleader and activities include a hot dog dinner and uniform fittings for those needing to order uniforms. For details, call Ms. Hart at (803) 322-4290.
