Library's summer reading program on last week

Total up those reading minutes. This is the final week of the York County libraries vacation reading program for ages 3 to 12. For details, visit www.yclibrary.org or call 981-5888. Children can keep track of minutes read or being read to and will receive prizes when they meet goals. Free programs include:

n Toddler time, for ages 24 to 35 months, 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fort Mill Public Library. A weekly story time with songs, finger plays and movement activities for toddlers and their parent or caregiver.

n Insect-O-Mania, for ages 10 to 12, 3 p.m. Tuesday, York County Library, Rock Hill. Learn about the life of bees from a local beekeeper and make an earthworm hotel. To register, call 981-5888.

n Family story time, for children of all ages accompanied by an adult, 4 p.m. Thursday at the York County Library.

The summer reading program for teens also will run through Friday for rising sixth- through 12th-graders. Some programs require registration. For a complete schedule visit www.yclibrary.org or call 981-5830.

n Anime Fest, for rising sixth- to 12th-graders, 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the York County Library. Enjoy Japanese food, music and door prizes. To register, call 981-5860.

n Guys Read, guys in grades sixth- through 12th can play video games and find out about books from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the York County Library. The event is sponsored by Woody's Music, Hobby Stop and Nichol's Store.

n Rock on with rock band, for rising sixth- to 12th-graders, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Mill Public Library. Teens can explore their inner rock star with Wii's "Rock Band" and play other video games.

n Change your look hair and make-up tips; rising sixth- through 12th-graders can learn quick and easy hair and makeup tips from cosmetologist Page Cauthen from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the York County Library. To register, call 981-5860.

The Friends of the York County Library book sale will be Thursday through Saturday at the First ARP Church gymnasium, 201 E. White St., Rock Hill. Preview night for Friends members is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memberships will be sold at the door for $10 individuals and $25 families. The sale is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Thousands of books will be for sale, priced at $1 per inch, measuring the height of the book stack. Videos, audio books and surplus library equipment will be for sale at bargain prices. Saturday is half-price day; books are 50 cents per inch, small paperbacks are 25 cents each and videos are 50 cents each. For details, call 981-5837.

The Culture and Heritage Museums will have the following events:

n Museum collections come to life in the Wonderful Wednesdays summer program series at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. In the series' final program, Catawba Cultural Traditions, participants will learn the traditional ties between the Catawba people and the river through stories and music. Following the program will be hands-on activities from noon to 3 p.m. Cost includes museum admission, $7 adults; $6 seniors; $5 youth, ages 4 to 17; free for children under 3 and CHM members. n Sights and Sounds of the American Revolution, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 5 at Historic Brattonsville, 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells. The sound of field drums and wooden fifes will take you back to the time of George Washington and Paul Revere. The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps of Plymouth, Mich., a junior corps for ages 12 to 18, recall the days when fifing and drumming were used to relay commands to soldiers, direct unit movements and provide inspiration. A fife and drum performance will be at 11 a.m.; Voices of the American Revolution: Readings from History will be at 11:45 a.m.; military drill and weapon demonstrations will be at noon; and hearth cooking demonstrations and tours of Col. William Bratton's home will be ongoing. Admission is adults, $6; seniors, $5; youth ages 4 to 17, $3; and members and children 3 and younger, free. For details, call Brattonsville at 684-2327.
