Essay contest winners named by DAR chapter
The Nation Ford chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has named winners of its annual American History essay contest. This year's essay was "I Spy: Espionage in the American Revolution." Winners, selected from over 200 entries, were Jochebed Bogunjoko, Springfield Middle School, Fort Mill; and Abigail Lockhart, homeschooled. The winners received a $50 U.S. savings bond.
Local coalition receives grant for minority services
Catawba Care Coalition received a $60,000 Minority AIDS Initiative Grant from Mecklenburg County to support medical case management for services for minorities with HIV/AIDS in York County. Approximately 67 percent of clients receiving services at Catawba Care Coalition are from racial and ethnic minority communities. The Minority AIDS Initiative provides new funding designed to strengthen organizational capacity and expand HIV-related services in minority communities. Catawba Care Coalition is a non-profit United Way agency that provides medical care and support services for people with HIV/AIDS and educates the community. It serves York, Chester and Lancaster counties.
York dancers bring home awards
Fascinating Rhythm Dance Studio of York was named America's Studio of the Year at Dance Machine's national finals in June in Wilkesboro, N.C. The studio was awarded the 2008 Grand National Champion, two Extreme Platinum Awards, seven Awesome Platinum Awards, 16 Awesome Gold Awards and three first-place overall awards. Family members of the dancers received the 2008 Parent Challenge Grand National Champion award for their routine. Other dance awards were the Junior Lyrical Company, 2008 Junior Choreography Grand National Champions; Caroline Whitesides and Madeline Curry, 2008 Junior Duet Grand National Champions; Madeline Curry, 2008 Junior Soloist Grand National Champion jazz solo; Ladd Jackson, 2008 Photogenic Grand National Champion. Arts council names literacy winners
The Arts Council of York County named winners of its 2008 Regional Literacy Competition Aug. 21 at the Center for the Arts. Winners were: first-place poetry competition, Allan Ryder-Cook of Rock Hill; first-place short story competition, Debra Moffitt of Charlotte.
Senior 4-H members receive awards
Two York County high school senior 4-H members have received awards. Winners were Stephen Steward of Rock Hill, state 4-H winner and $500 scholarship; Elizabeth Chapple of Clover, 4-H Presidential Tray winner and $1,500 scholarship. 4-H is the youth development program of Clemson University Extension Service.
Local DAR chapter wins membership award
The Nation Ford chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution received the Rebecca Pickens Bacon Membership Award at the S.C. State Conference in Columbia. The award is presented annually to the S.C. chapter with the most new members. The chapter and society promote historic, patriotic and educational endeavors.
Tega Cay Lions win newsletter award
The Tega Cay Lions won first place in the newsletter contest at the S.C. District 32-D Cabinet Meeting July 28 in Blythewood. The award is given for a club with over 50 members for 2007-08.
Earth Fare donates to area food bank
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina received $5,899.60 from Earth Fare in Rock Hill. The non-profit food bank strives to eliminate hunger by the soli citation and distribution of food.
