Saturday Jam will celebrate Weed and Seed success

The third annual Celebration Jam, honoring the accomplishments in Rock Hill's Weed and Seed communities, will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Emmett Scott Center, 801 Crawford Road, Rock Hill.

The event will feature speakers, praise and worship music, the Emmett Scott Soul Steppers, a children's carnival, a bicycle rodeo, train rides and an obstacle course demonstrating the operation of a vehicle while under-the-influence.

Free prizes, services and items such as haircuts, meals, groceries, clothes and more will be given away. A local fire department will provide blood pressure checks and will demonstrate to children what they should do in case of a fire.

Organizations participating will be Operation Help One Another, Piedmont Healthcare System, Region II Adoptions, the Teen Health Center, Safe Passage, Keystone Substance Abuse Services, local churches and more.

Community organizations involved in the Weed and Seed community project are the city of Rock Hill, Urban Rock Hill Weed and Seed, Redemption World Fellowship, God's Outreach, Power Team Inc. and Care Task Force.

Dinner theater show planned in York

A dinner theater performance of the comedic murder mystery "Bel Canto" will be at 2 p.m. May 11 and 18 and at 7 p.m. May 12 and 15 through 17 at the Palmetto Room, 22 N. Congress St., York. Hometown Promotions has teamed up with the Palmetto Room to present the play.

The May 12 performance is a special benefit for Hospice and Community Care. The play is set in the 1940s on opening night at the opera and features a murdered diva, a harboiled gumshoe and an array of unusual suspects.

Downtown concert is planned in York

Downtown Live will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. beginning May 15 in downtown York, in the parking lot of Whiteside Cleaners and Uniform Rental, 5 E. Madison St., York.

The event is an outdoor community concert series. Performing will be Dave Lambert and the Carolina Rails, a five-piece group playing country and rock favorites.

Food and beverages will be sold. Rain date will be May 22. The Greater York Chamber of Commerce and South Carolina Bank and Trust of the Piedmont are sponsors.

Fewell Park center will host Ansel Couch

Ansel Couch will perform at Fewell Park Recreation Center's first summer concert at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the park, 1204 Alexander Road, Rock Hill. Couch is a singer, guitarist and songwriter.

Prominent printmaker will speak at woman's club

Gary T. Kerr, an internationally known printmaker, will speak at the Woman's Club of Rock Hill at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the clubhouse, 607 Aiken Ave., Rock Hill.

Wine and hors d' oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m. Kerr is president of Fine Art Impressions photography and printmaking studios in Davidson, N.C.

He will speak about giclee, an archival digital printmaking technique he used to reproduce the Joyce Netzler watercolor of the pergola and gardens being restored by the club. The limited edition prints are numbered, signed by the artist, matted and ready for framing. Prints will be $75 each at the event.

Kerr is recognized in the national and international fine art marketplace for his work replicating original art to museum-quality standards. In March, Kerr reproduced a 17th-century painting from the permanent collection in the Louvre in Paris. The work was artist Simon Vouet's "Prudence Leading Peace and Abundance," an oil on canvas that dates to 1645.

The event is free. Tax -deductible contributions will be accepted for the Mauldin gardens restoration project. Space is limited and reservations are required by calling 328-8888.

Youth fishing rodeo will be Saturday

The Draper Wildlife Management Area youth fishing rodeo and jakes event, for ages 5 to 17, will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Wildlife Management Area on S.C. 322 McConnells.

The pond is stocked with catfish and participants are asked to bring their own equipment. Bait, refreshments and lunch will be provided. Prizes will be awarded. For details, call (803) 684-4078.

Fort Mill auditions planned for 'Pollyanna'

The Fort Mill Community Playhouse will have auditions for its summer youth production "Pollyanna" from 2 to 4 p.m. May 18 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. May 19.

Production dates are July 10 to 13. The play will be directed by Susan Windham Capotosto. Ages of participants range from 6 to 18 for a cast of six boys, nine girls and other townspeople. Readings will be from a script.

The story is about a 10-year-old orphan, Pollyana, who goes to live in Beldingsville, Vt., with her wealthy but harsh and stern Aunt Polly. Pollyanna uses her "Gladness Game," taught to her by her father, to transform the dispirited New England town into a pleasant place to live. Day trips planned on Catawba, Broad rivers

The Museum of York County will have a series of day trips exploring the natural and cultural history of the Catawba and Broad rivers with geologist Irene Boland, naturalist Steve Fields and historian Michael Scoggins.

The trips run from May through November and will begin at the Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill, where participants will have the opportunity to view the exhibition "River Docs: A Catawba River Narrative."

The first trip will be Catawba River: Rocky Mount and Lando, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Future programs include Catawba River: Landsford Canal, June 14; Broad River: Worth Mountain Park and Pinckneyville, Aug. 9; Catawba River: Nation Ford and Museum of Life and the Environment Site, Sept. 13; Broad River: Fish Dam Ford, Oct. 11, and Broad River: York County's western river, Nov. 8.

Travel is provided by the museum van. Participants must be 18 or older due to van occupancy restrictions. Moderate hiking is involved in each trip so sturdy walking or hiking shoes and long pants are recommended.

PRT travel group plans West Virginia trip

Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism's Happy Travelers group is accepting registration for a June 4 to 6 trip to Parkersburg, W.Va.

The trip will include a visit to the Fenton Glass Factory, a sternwheeler cruise to Blennerhassett Island with a mansion tour and wagon ride, a visit to the Middleton Doll Factory, a tour of historic Marietta, Ohio, and a dessert tour of the Historic Smoot Theatre with entertainment. Cost is $380 per person, including transportation, lodging, four meals, activities and taxes.

Adults of all ages are welcome and participants do not have to be a member of the group. Cancellation insurance is available.

Local artist demos planned on May 13

Local artists will demonstrate their techniques from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 13 at City Plaza at 140 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Featured artists include Jay Thompson, painting; Linda Meetze Lucas, jewelry; Alan Noll, ceramic sculpture; Liz Funderburk, knot tie for gem stones; Nancy Ray, black and white pen and ink drawings; Jackie Clarkin, painting; Holly Glasscock, watercolor; and Bob Thrower, basket weaving and wood carving. Concerts planned by schools, community groups

The following concerts are planned:

• The Northwestern High School bands will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. May 13 in the auditorium, 2503 W. Main St., Rock Hill. The ninth-grade band, concert band and symphonic band will perform. In addition to the program, each band will present a tribute to service men and women from all branches of the service. Veterans and active service personnel are invited as special guests. Also the band will pay tribute to the senior band class of 2008. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. • The choral department of Rock Hill High School will present its spring concert, "An Evening of Song," at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the auditorium, 320 W. Springdale Road, Rock Hill. Featured will be the concert choir, which recently received a superior rating at the state choral festival and first place in the Smoky Mountain Choral festival in Gatlinburg, Tenn. The choir will perform festival music, classical pieces and a finale of popular music. Bella Voce, an auditioned female group, will sing music by Brahms, Holst and Kodaly. The program will include music from multiple genres such as Spanish, Latin, Hungarian, gospel and popular. The program will begin with the choir singing "O Magnum Mysterium" by Carillo in the round and will end with Bobby Darin's, "Mack the Knife."

• The 2008 community student concert will be at 2 p.m. May 18 at First United Methodist Church, 202 W. Gay St., Lancaster. The event features performances of music students from the Indian Land High School brass ensemble, the Indian Land High School clarinet duo, the First United Methodist Church children's choir, members of the Palmetto and Metrolina home school associations, Marvin Ridge Middle School band, Marvin Ridge High School band, Hawk Ridge Elementary School and Community House Middle School. The program will include traditional classical, Baroque pieces, Disney classics and arrangements by Jim Engebreston and Ricky Lombardo. The concert is free and open to the public. Clover programs plan May 12 family event

Bright Beginnings of the Clover School district is sponsoring a free family event, Stories on the Lawn, an evening of stories, songs, rhymes and games for families with young children. The event will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 12 at Clover Memorial Stadium, Clinton Street entrance, 1625 S.C. 55 East, Clover. Swim lessons offered through Rock Hill PRT

Free summer swim lessons are offered through Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism for ages 4 through adult, beginning June 9. They will run every two weeks until Aug. 1. Library book sale is Saturday at Oratory

The friends of the York County Library book sale will be Thursday through Saturday at the Pope John Center at the Oratory, 434 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill. Preview night for Friends members is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memberships will be sold at the door for $10 for individuals and $25 for families. Memberships are valid for one year.

The sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Thousands of books will be for sale, priced at $1 per inch, measuring the height of the book stack. Videos, audio books and surplus library equipment will be for sale.

Saturday is half-price day; books are 50 cents per inch, small paperbacks are 25 cents each and videos are 50 cents.

Shag lessons offered at St. John's church

Shag lessons will be offered at St. John's Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Classes will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and May 14, 21 and June 4 in the St. John's Center. A shag practice session will be at 7:30 p.m. May 28 with no lesson. Richard Cousins, a professional dance instructor, will teach the series of lessons and shag practice session. These area organizations are having fundraisers:

Brunch, volunteer fair are planned by hospice

Hospice and Community Care, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, offers the following:

• Inaugural Mother's Day brunch from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. The event will memorialize the loss of mothers and is open to Hospice and Community care families and the public. Registration is required. The fair is for those interested in volunteering or who already volunteer, but are interested in other volunteer opportunities. Positions include knitting prayer shawls for patients, helping during community events, clerical work, assisting with children's programs and being a patient companion. Support groups help with life's troubles

The following support groups will meet:

• A support group for caregivers will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 2868 Gaston Farm Road, Richburg. Agape Hospice and Catawba Area Agency on Aging sponsor the group for caregivers to share their ideas, joys and challenges. The group meets the second Thursday of each month. Family Connection of South Carolina will have the following events:

• Autism support group, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. A special program will be presented.

• Hitch up, hearing impaired support group, 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Methodist Church.

• Coffee break, at 9:30 a.m. at Cupps Cafe, 221 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill. All families and groups are welcome.

• Sharing parents support group, 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 15 at St. John's Methodist Church. A support group for special needs families and children, ages birth to 6.

• YouthNet brothers and sisters support/kid connection, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 at 507 E. Black St., Rock Hill. A support group for children ages 8 to 13 who have a special needs sibling.
