Ballet dancers will be flying high this weekend

The York County Ballet Company will perform "Peter Pan" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Saturday and May 18 in Johnson Hall Theatre at Winthrop University.

Tickets are $12, available at the Bookworm, 700 Cherry Road, Rock Hill, at the box office before the performances and online at www.yorkcountyballet.org.

The show is the premiere of an original ballet choreographed by Anne Blackwell and Leslie Cooper. Flying portions of the production will be staged by world-renowned Flying Foys, who for 50 years have produced the flying portions of major productions of "Peter Pan."

The production is based on the novel by J.M. Barrie and is directed by Blackwell. It features performances by Taylor Burnette as Peter Pan, Jessica Miller as Tinkerbell, Victor Melvin as Captain Hook and Eliza Blades as Smee. The roles of the Darling children are played by Jessica Tillman, Jamie Scott and Katie Dobrowski.

Many of the York County Ballet members performing in this production have training and experience at a national and state level. The York County Ballet is funded in part by a grant from the Arts Council of York County.

Comedy murder mystery continues showing in York

A dinner theater performance of the comedic murder mystery "Bel Canto" will be at 2 p.m. today and May 18 and at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday at the Palmetto Room, 22 N. Congress St., York. Hometown Promotions has teamed up with the Palmetto Room to present the play.

The Tuesday performance is a benefit for Hospice and Community Care. The play is set in the 1940s on opening night at the opera and features a murdered diva, a harboiled gumshoe and an array of unusual suspects.

Summer street party starts in York this week

Downtown Live will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. beginning Thursday in downtown York, in the parking lot of Whiteside Cleaners and Uniform Rental, 5 E. Madison St., York.

The event is an outdoor community concert series. Performing will be Dave Lambert and the Carolina Rails, a five-piece group playing country and rock favorites. Admission is free. Food and beverages will be sold. Rain date will be May 22.

Cultural events include art exhibits, demos

The Arts Council of York County will have the following events:

• Each month the work of a local artist is featured in the Rock Hill City Hall Rotunda Gallery, 155 Johnson St., second floor. The artwork of Savannah Cudd of Lancaster is on display during May. Cudd is a 2001 graduate of Lancaster High School and a 2006 graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

• Local artists will demonstrate their techniques from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall Plaza at 140 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Featured artists include Jay Thompson, painting; Linda Meetze Lucas, jewelry; Alan Noll, ceramic sculpture; Liz Funderburk, knot tie for gem stones; Nancy Ray, black and white pen and ink drawings; Jackie Clarkin, painting; Holly Glasscock, watercolor; and Bob Thrower, basket weaving and wood carving. The demonstrations are free and open to the public.

• A bluegrass and barbecue event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Cotton Alley in Old Town Rock Hill, just outside the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St. Ken Scoggins and Miller's Creek will perform bluegrass. A dinner of barbecued ribs, grilled corn on the cob and other sides will be prepared by Dan Huntley, columnist and author. Complimentary cocktails will be served from 4 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $10 for Art After Hours members and must be purchased in advance by Wednesday. All proceeds benefit arts programming for the 2008 to 2009 season.

• The Rock's Art and Music Festival will be from 5 to 10 p.m. May 22 on Main Street in downtown Rock Hill. At 5 p.m. an art market will feature dozens of artists with live music and food and drink vendors. At 8 p.m. Roy "Futureman" Wooten and the Black Mozart Ensemble will perform at The Freedom Center, 215 E. Main St. Tickets for the show are $15 in advance and $18 on show day. Concerts are on tap by school bands, choirs

These concerts are planned:

• The Northwestern High School bands will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium, 2503 W. Main St., Rock Hill. The ninth-grade band, concert band and symphonic band will perform. In addition to the program, each band will present a tribute to service men and women. Veterans and active service personnel are invited as special guests. The band also will pay tribute to the senior band class of 2008. Admission is $4 adults and $2 students. • The South Pointe Choral program will present "The Colors of Our World," an evening of music representing international cultures at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the auditorium, 801 Neely Road, Rock Hill. The concert will feature the Stallion Singers; soloists Chrissy Hoskins, Sarah Boyd and Wayne Leiwald; and the SPHS Stallion Corral, who recently placed fifth in the state and won a superior rating. • The 2008 community student concert will be at 2 p.m. May 18 at First United Methodist Church, 202 W. Gay St., Lancaster. The event features performances of music students from the Indian Land High School brass ensemble, the Indian Land High School clarinet duo, the First United Methodist Church children's choir, members of the Palmetto and Metrolina home school associations, Marvin Ridge Middle School band, Marvin Ridge High School band, Hawk Ridge Elementary School and Community House Middle School. The program will include traditional classical, Baroque pieces, Disney classics and arrangements by Jim Engebreston and Ricky Lombardo. The concert is free and open to the public. Auditions planned for Yorkville Players shows

The Young Yorkville Players will have auditions for their summer youth production of two one-act shows at 7 p.m. May 21 and 22 at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York.

The plays are "15 Minute Hamlet" by Tom Stoppard and "The Shakespeare Project," adapted by James Zager. Casting will be for 14 to 24 parts. Amanda Proffit will direct both plays.

Governors school official is speaking in Chester

Deneshia Smith, a representative from the South Carolina Governor's School of the Arts, will speak at 6 p .m. Monday at the Market Building, 116 Columbia St., Chester.

Students and families interested in the school are invited. The school is a public, residential high school with a focus on arts such as music, drama, creative writing, art and more. Boyd Hill center showcases programs during open house

Boyd Hill Recreation Center, 1165 Constitution Blvd., Rock Hill, will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Information will be available about recreation and leisure opportunities, such as art classes and senior and therapeutic programs.

On display will be handmade art, including quilts, porcelain dolls, crochet items, flower arrangements and more. Some handmade items will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit Area 11 Special Olympics. For details, call 329-5652.

Clover family event features stories, games

Bright Beginnings of the Clover School district is sponsoring a free family event, Stories on the Lawn, an evening of stories, songs, rhymes and games for families with young children.

The event will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Clover Memorial Stadium, Clinton Street entrance, 1625 S.C. 55 East, Clover. The event includes farm-themed activities and each family will receive a free children's book. Families are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair. Refreshments will be provided. NACAR party planned by Lancaster shaggers

The Lancaster Shag Club will have a NASCAR theme party at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lancaster Moose Lodge, 200 Moose Drive, Lancaster. Roy Childress of Burlington, N.C. will DJ. Chord piano class offered at York Tech

A beginning class in chord piano will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at York Technical College, 452 S. Anderson Road, Rock Hill. The class will teach students in one session all the chords needed to play any pop song, any style, any key, and to read chord symbols, not notes.

Salvation Army hosts reception, gives awards

The Advisory Board of the Salvation Army will celebrate national Salvation Army week with a coffee and donut reception and open house at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the headquarters, 119 S. Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill.

Golf tourney, thrift sale will benefit area causes

• The first annual Jackson Classic golf tournament will be at 9:30 a.m. June 5 at Waterford Golf Club, 1900 Clubhouse Drive, Rock Hill. The event is shotgun start and captain's choice format. Cost is $75 per player or $275 per foursome and includes cart, green fees and lunch. Entries are due by May 23.
