Spotlight on Winthrop Galleries

New exhibitions by regional artists

- The Herald

Winthrop University Galleries is opening two new exhibitions, INTERLACED by Anne Lemanski in the Rutledge Gallery and La Mostra Della Borsa by Alf Ward in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery on Feb. 6 with an opening reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Rutledge and Patrick Galleries. Also, the Master of Fine Arts Open Studio Night is from 6 to 8 p.m. in McLaurin Hall, second floor student studios. The reception and studio night are open to the public and free of charge with plenty of free parking.

North Carolina artist Anne Lemanski presents her first solo exhibition. It will include three-dimensional "skinned" forms as well as a new series of two-dimensional pieces, below.

Artist and Professor Emeritus of Winthrop's Department of Fine Arts Alfred Ward presents an exhibition of handbags and accessories that find their origins in his fashion product design work in England some 30 years ago. The pieces in this exhibition reflect his desire to perpetuate some ancient and modern production practices from Italy, France, and England by employing them in the contemporary design of handbags and fashion accessories.

Both exhibitions will run until March 26.

Winthrop University Galleries also is opening several exhibitions focusing on student artwork. Opening Monday and running until March 5 in the Rutledge Window with a View is "The Function of Art: Winthrop Crafts," a faculty juried exhibition of student work in jewelry/metals and ceramics. Pieces from the collection are seen above.

Winthrop University Galleries is located in the Rutledge Building and McLaurin Hall on the campus of Winthrop University. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be closed March 16 to 20. For more information, call 803-323-2493 or visit www.winthrop.edu/vpa/galleries.
