What’s there to do on a Friday night in the dead of summer? We recommend a good movie. No, not what’s opening at the theater down the street. Instead, check out an old movie you may not have seen — or one you want to share with the kids.
Each Friday night, from now till Aug. 8, you can head to Rock Hill’s City Hall amphitheater (bring a blanket or your own comfy beach chair) and grab a seat for “Wait Until Dark,” five film classics shown outdoors. You’ll think you’ve tripped back in time to the drive-in.
The shows are $3, but if you shop downtown on that Friday and bring a merchant receipt, you get in free. The films start at 8:45 p.m. Food, beer and wine will be sold; no coolers allowed.
Here’s what’s showing:
• Tonight: “Singin’ In the Rain”
Voted the No. 1 movie musical in American film history, this 1952 classic stars Gene Kelly singing, dancing and falling in love with Debbie Reynolds. Must-see moments: Donald O’Connor running up the wall and Kelly splashing ‘round the street light.
• July 18: “To Kill A Mockingbird”
Harper Lee wrote the book. Gregory Peck brought Atticus Finch, a Depression-era lawyer in the South, to unforgettable life.
• July 25: “E.T. — The Extraterrestrial”
Who can forget Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi blockbuster about a young boy who discovers a cuddly alien in his backyard? Bring your own Reese’s Pieces.
• Aug. 1: “Some Like It Hot”
To evade the bad guys, two musicians disguise themselves as women in an all-girl band. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are the cross-dressing duo, while Marilyn Monroe provides the frilly intrigue.
• Aug. 8: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”
This isn’t the Johnny Depp version. It’s less weird. It’s the 1971 original with Gene Wilder as the off-beat candy maker who gives kids a tour of his factory. And speaking of Wonka, if you buy a Wonka Bar downtown with a golden ticket, you get dinner and the movie for 10 friends.
