Wow! It’s fall already and everyone’s coming back to Winthrop University.
So?
That means it’s Welcome Week — seven days of music, fun and good times for students and the community.
It’s a tradition that Winthrop throws a great party the first week of school and this year is no exception.
It’s also cheap. The public can get in for $7 an event (or $15 for a weeklong pass).
Meanwhile, here’s what you can see:
• August 23: The Atlanta Drumline, 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium. They’re known for precision, spirit and phenomenal sound. Rounding out the bill is comedian Retta (“Moesha”).
• August 24: Magician/illusionist Justin Kredible, 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium.
• August 25: Convocation, followed by picnic at 5 p.m. on the front lawn. Come out and mingle. Then there’s music by Hooked on Tonics, a fusion of rock, hip-hop, funk and soul. That’s a powerful fusion, folks.
• August 28: Perennial favorite Tom DeLuca returns, 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium. If you don’t recognize the name, he’s one of the most popular hypnotists on the college circuit. Just remember: You can’t be forced to do anything under hypnosis that you weren’t inclined to do with full consciousness.
• August 29: “A Night of Acclaimed Spoken Word,” 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium. Slamming poets take the stage for a night that must be experienced. Angelo Geter, 2008 Southeast Collegiate Poetry champ, hosts and welcomes Mayda Del Valle of Def Poetry Jam and Asia.
• August 30: Singer-songwriters Chris Cauley and Chinua Hawk and rock band Lloyd Dobler Effect, 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium.
• August 31: A capella phenom Chapter 6, with comic Buzz Sutherland, 8 p.m., Byrnes Auditorium.
• Final details: Events are only $ 5 each with a Winthrop ID, $7 without and free with Welcome Week Pass. Welcome Week passes are only $ 10 with the ID or $15 without, and you can get them at the Dinkins Information Desk and at all DSU events during Welcome Week.
