The Old Town Amphitheatre in downtown Rock Hill is playing host to “Jerry Finnegan’s Sister.”
That’s a play, not a person, a two-person play chronicling the lives of Brian Dowd and Beth Finnegan. Brian’s in love with Beth, but one thing stands between the two — Beth is the sister of Brian’s best friend, Jerry, and it’s the night before Beth’s wedding. In typical comic fashion, Brian realizes he has to speak up and express his love for Beth.
Stephanie Daniels, drama teacher at Rock Hill High, is directing the production for Rock Hill Community Theatre. She says the play “is a romantic comedy and great show for a date.” She says it will make for a great night of entertainment.
The hour-long play will be staged outdoors at the Old Town Amphitheatre at Rock Hill City Hall tonight and Saturday. The show starts at 8 p.m., and cost is $5 at the door (or $3 with a receipt from a downtown business). Concessions will be sold, with proceeds going tonight to Pilgrims’ Inn and Saturday night to Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Jimmy Chrismon, drama teacher at South Pointe High, and Winthrop University student Courtney Lavender portray Brian and Beth, the play’s only characters. Daniels said having only two performers in the play does put more pressure on the actors, but provides for simple rehearsals.
“Only having two people does make it tough,” Daniels says. “But Brian (Chrismon) carries the show. He has a lot of lines that will keep the crowd engaged.”
Daniels says the play will be entered into the South Carolina Theater Association County Theater Festival, where RHCT competes against other community theaters around the state. The group won the competition last year with “Tic, Tic, Boom.”
