Area veterans events begin today

These events are planned in honor of Veterans Day today and next week:

Today

A celebration to unveil the new veterans garden at Glencairn Garden on Charlotte Avenue in Rock Hill will be at 10 a.m., featuring an honor guard, bagpipes, military bands and speeches by local and state dignitaries, including S.C. Adjutant Gen. Stan Spears. Parking will be available at Garden Sanctuary Church, 831 Cedar St. A shuttle service will provide rides to the ceremony. Bleachers will offer seating.

Saturday

The annual Veterans Day parade in downtown York will begin at 11 a.m. After the parade, a ceremony honoring service members will be at the Whitesides Laundry parking lot on North Congress Street. Barbecue will be $7 per plate and drinks are $1. Proceeds benefit Scouting programs. Speakers will address the crowd.

A Veterans Day parade and program will begin at 10 a.m. on Main Street in downtown Lancaster. The parade lineup begins at 9 a.m. Details, 803-283-2469.

Wednesday

The Chester County Veterans Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. in the Chester County War Memorial Building at 154 Main St. Retired Maj. Gen. Wade McManus Jr. will speak. The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and Chester High School band will participate. The event is sponsored by the Chester County Veterans Affairs, the American Legion Post 27, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5930, U.S. Marine Corps League Detachment 1161 and their ladies auxiliaries.
