Memorial part of new addition at Glencairn

- mgarfield@heraldonline.com

Visitors to Rock Hill's new veterans garden can sit on swings and listen to the sound of water flowing down a cascade fountain.

The focal point is a curved brick wall that features seals honoring each service branch — Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.

A final seal recognizes prisoners of war and persons missing in action.

The memorial wall opens as part of a $1.6 million addition to Glencairn Garden, a Charlotte Avenue park that has become a Rock Hill landmark.

Architect Howell Beach designed the wall to blend with existing features at Glencairn. Beach studied under internationally known architect Robert Marvin, creator of the park's initial design.
