2 Minute Tuesday

Lancaster native ready for her fashion close-up

- The Herald

Lancaster native Marilyn Crawford, managing director of Windsor PTM, a Las Vegas-based global strategic marketing company, will be a contestant on “Launch My Line,” a new fashion competition series that debuts Dec. 2 on Bravo TV.

The University of South Carolina and Harvard University graduate recently spoke with The Herald.

How long did you live in Lancaster? Do you visit often?

I lived in Lancaster basically all my life until I graduated college. I used to go back all the time until I lost my mother and father and it became very hard for me, emotionally.

Which Lancaster schools did you attend?

I attended Clinton Elementary School, which had a huge impact on me. To this day, I can still remember the school’s anthem. I also attended York Junior High and graduated early from Lancaster High School.

What are some fond memories you have from living in Lancaster?

It starts with my family — my brother and three sisters and my most incredible parents — who gave me a strong foundation. I remember walking down to the local Dairy Queen, riding horses bareback, making strawberry shortcake with my mother, talking with neighbors, stuff like that.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Lancaster?

My brother and I will take a Luxury Van and drive down from his home in Pennsylvania to Lancaster. We go to the grave site of our parents, visit all my parents’ friends, go to church, just enjoy the simple things.

What are some hobbies of yours?

I enjoy horseback riding, watching tennis, reading and dancing. I love all types of dance.

How old are you?

I'm old enough to be grateful and thankful for the blessings in life, but young enough to still enjoy it all.

What was your major in college?

In undergrad at the University of South Carolina, it was psychology and journalism. In graduate school, it was behavioral sciences, which is education, and then above that is when I went to Harvard University, which was executive marketing.

What is a challenge that you have overcome that you think has made you a stronger?

There have been several. The largest being I don't know when to say no. I try to help everyone. Remember Oprah said she had to learn how to say no? I had to learn how to say no, too.

How have you worked on that?

I don't answer people right away. I think about things overnight before I give an answer. I think about my time limitations, my priorities and my passion, itself, because in life, you have to do things you enjoy.

How did you get selected to be on the show and what do you hope to get out of it?

I got a call out of the blue from someone who knew about the show in Hollywood and I jumped on the opportunity. I think new experiences help us grow. I met people who I never would have crossed paths with otherwise.

Have you always wanted to design clothes?

I have always designed my own coats and dresses. When I would go into a boutique store, they never had unique, fashionable things to fit me. Because if you’re not a size zero or 2, nothing fits. I’ve designed for my friends as well. I did a shearling (sheepskin) coat for Jackče Harry of “Sister, Sister.”

What advice would you give to young South Carolinians about their dreams/goals?

You have to be committed, determined and focused; be willing to make a sacrifice. Follow your passion; do what you love. Be organized and prepared. Think outside the box; don't be afraid of any challenge. Even if you don't get what you’re after, the journey is indeed worth it.

What does a typical weekend look like for you?

Every weekend is different. One weekend I might be sitting on my couch, watching a movie and the next I will be flying out to Dubai.

What do enjoy doing during your free time?

I like a bubble bath, a walk on the beach and attending my private club, 2810 Vegas in Las Vegas. I also enjoy spending time with family.
