City truck takes out power lines

A Rock Hill city employee was jailed Monday after officials said he left the scene of an accident where a city truck he drove snapped several power lines and left them strewn across the road.

Authorities charged William Thomas Estes, 65, of 1745 Sturgis Road with leaving the scene of an accident, according to a Rock Hill Police report.

The charge stems from an incident Monday as Estes drove a Mack truck with a trailer in the 1000 block of Mount Holly Road. A witness told police the truck snagged a power line, causing a loud explosion when three utility poles snapped, the report notes.

The witness told police the driver failed to stop.

Estes told police he left the scene so he would not block traffic, the report notes.

Officials found three utility poles snapped in half, resulting in several power lines in the roadway, the report notes.

Estes, whose bond was set at $150, was released Tuesday afternoon.

Man struck by train was suicide victim, police say

A 25-year-old North Carolina man committed suicide by letting himself get hit by a train, police said.

James Brandon Alger of Gastonia, N.C., had been seen walking on railroad tracks between Interstate 77 and Red River Road, according to a report from York County Sheriff's Office.

The report notes Alger was struck by the train around 11 a.m. Monday as he was walking between the railroad tracks. Authorities found him lying beside the tracks, according to the report.

A car, believed to belong to Alger, was located on I-77 southbound at the 80-mile marker, the report notes.
