Time Warner Cable could be competing with Comporium for customers in the northern half of York County.

The York County Council on Monday unanimously granted the cable conglomerate's request to serve the unincorporated areas of the county north of S.C. 5.

This would allow for cable TV competition in areas already serviced by Comporium, said County Attorney Melvin McKeown. Historically, cable competition leads to lower rates.

Time Warner Entertainment, which serves Mecklenburg County and parts of Clover, asked the state in March to allow them to provide cable to the northern half of York County, McKeown said. The state asked for York County's opinion and will make a final decision on the deal later.

Incorporated areas of Fort Mill and Rock Hill and the Carowinds area aren't included in this request.

County staff recommended approving this request, County Manager Jim Baker said, and the County Council acted on their recommendation without further discussion.
