FORT MILL -- Ask a scientist how ocean waves on the Grand Strand are created, and he'll probably start droning on about offshore surface winds.Pose the same question to Jamie Gaffney, maintenance director at Carowinds amusement park, and he'll tell you about two huge fans.
Carowinds will open its new Bondi Beach attraction Saturday at its Boomerang Bay water park. Bondi, a 600,000-gallon pool with lifelike waves thanks to those fans, is part of a 4-acre expansion including new restrooms, food options and cabanas with chair-side service. Park officials unveiled the Aussie-themed updates Wednesday afternoon. Here's a look:
• Making waves: The Bondi Beach wave pool pulls water into eight chambers inside a machine room at the back of the pool. As the water is pulled in, two giant fans alternate blasts of air to make depressions in the water.
"What you get is a teetering effect," Gaffney, the maintenance director, said. "It's all done with air."
The water, now moving up and down, is pushed back into the pool in diamond-like shapes, creating the realistic waves complete with whitewater as it rolls from a 6-foot depth to the artificial shore, just like the beach.
"If you've ever been to our other wave pool or water attractions, you'll realize this is a totally different kind of fun," park spokesman Scott Anderson said.
• Sans sand: Bondi Beach looks like a typical ocean beach, minus the sand. Instead, the water washes across a 275-foot long concrete shoreline. Scores of lounge chairs are available on the concrete beach for watchful parents and sunbathers.
• Caro-cabana: The water park expansion also includes 27 cabanas available for daily rental. The cabanas come with chairside service, a fan and complimentary water. Rental fees range from $59 to $99.
• Extras: Additionally, the park has added a food stand with patio, a merchandise store and restrooms with changing areas and lockers near Bondi Beach. Life jackets are available free of charge for less experienced swimmers, and lifeguards are on duty at all times.
