FORT MILL -- A garage shop was destroyed Thursday morning in a fire at 407 Nims St., said Ken Kerber, Fort Mill fire chief. No one was injured in the house adjacent to the garage, Kerber said.
The accidental fire just before 3 a.m. is believed to have started with mechanical failure of a stove in the shop, Kerber said. The occupants of the home, neighbors, and emergency officials were alerted to the fire by a Herald newspaper carrier who called 911 and sounded her vehicle horn, Kerber said.
Banner plane crashes near North Myrtle Beach
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- A banner plane crashed in the ocean just off North Myrtle Beach on Thursday. A city official said there were no serious injuries.
City spokeswomen Nicolle Aiello said the pilot was the only one onboard. He freed himself and got to shore -- about 35 feet away -- on his own. Aiello said the pilot said he planned to get himself to a hospital.
About 200 yards of the beach were closed as officials checked for fuel spills from the plane, which could be seen upside down in the water.
Aiello said the beach would reopen today for the July 4th weekend.
State acquires more of Jocassee Gorges
COLUMBIA -- South Carolina now owns a bit more of Jocassee Gorges.
The state Natural Resources Department says it purchased 63 acres of the scenic land in the northwest corner of the state from developer Crescent Resources. The sales price on the deed was $37,980.
The newly acquired land on a peninsula on Lake Jocassee will be managed as part of the agency's Jocassee Gorges, a 33,000-acre tract of Wildlife Management Area.
Natural Resources director John Frampton welcomed the acquisition. He said if that area had been developed, it would have affected the area's beauty and habitat.
Ports Authority rejects Daniel Island offer
CHARLESTON -- The State Ports Authority has rejected an offer from Daniel Island residents to buy 1,300 acres of agency property on the island for $25 million.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the Daniel Island Property Owners Association had made the offer on the land last week.
The Ports Authority this week rejected the offer as too low.
The residents said the struggling real estate market and the limited development potential for the soft land justified the sale.
Ports Authority Chairman David Posek says the agency is updating an appraisal but doesn't think the $25 million offer approaches the value of the property.
The Ports Authority originally wanted to build a terminal on the land but objections led them to the old Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston, instead.
