Off-duty officer foils burglary of business

Three Charlotte men and a woman have been jailed after the foiled weekend burglary of a Rock Hill loan company.

Authorities charged Charles Lee Chancellor, 39, with third-degree burglary and criminal conspiracy in connection with an incident at Quick Loans on Anderson Road, according to a Rock Hill Police report. Also facing the same charges are Anthony Bennett, 33, Elijah Conrad, 24, and Tracy Robinson, 34.

The charges stem from an incident around 12:14 a.m. Sunday at Quick Loans, 701 N. Anderson Road, Suite 99. An off-duty police officer noticed a suspicious person dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored pants walk through the parking lot of the closed business.

As the officer turned around, a dark-colored pickup truck left the business parking lot, according to the report. The officer stopped the truck after the driver turned on the vehicle's lights near the 800 block of Mount Gallant Road, the report states.

"They were caught in the act by an off-duty officer," Lt. Jerry Waldrop said. "He saw them around the building. He saw them leaving with the lights off on their pickup truck."

Bennett, the driver, said they were lost and were trying to find the interstate, the report states.

Police seized a black hooded sweatshirt with a pair of yellow latex gloves in the front pocket, two pairs of work gloves and a piece of a Champion spark plug, the report notes.

At Quick Loans, police found more pieces of a Champion spark plug and a shattered business window, according to the report.

The report said Conrad had a pair of latex gloves in his pocket, and Bennett had a small, black flashlight in his pocket.

A judge set bond at $105,000 for Chancellor and Bennett, according to the York County Sheriff's Office Web site. Bond was set at $55,000 for Conrad and Robinson, the Web site states.

The four were in custody Tuesday evening at York County Detention Center.
