closeJoseph Herring earns Eagle Scout
Joseph Herring of Troop 31 has received the rank of Eagle Scout. Herring has been a member of Troop 31 for five years. For his Eagle Scout project, Joseph mulched all the trails at Fewell Park and helped clear debris from the creek. The project involved more than 120 hours of volunteer work. Herring is a rising junior at South Pointe High School. He is the son of Gene and Kelly Herring of Rock Hill and the grandson of Neil Herring of Dillon. Troop 31 is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church. Scoutmaster is Jody Spradley.
4-H horse riders earn state honors in Clemson
Youth from the Star, Strips and Snips 4-H Horse Club participated in the S.C. State Horse Show in June in Clemson. Winners were Courtney Barnett, Rea Campbell and Ashley McCarter, overall high team for oral reasons and first-place junior team; Ashley McCarter, first high individual; Rea Campbell, fourth high individual; Rea Campbell placed in English and Western classes; Ashley McCarter placed in speed events; Courtney Barnett placed in English classes; Ashley McCarter qualified for the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show.
4-H is the youth development program of the Clemson Univeristy Extension Service.
DAR members take part in Continental Congress
Regent Jacci Wagner and Betty Jane Hayden of the Nation Ford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Tega Cay recently attended the 117th Continental Congress in Washington D.C. This was the first Continental Congress attended since the chapter was organized last year. More than 3,000 members attended the event. While at the Congress, members attended opening night, many events, informational committee meetings , regular sessions and business meetings.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history and support better education for the nation's children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
MYCO honors volunteers with annual awards
The annual awards for the Museum of York County Guild were presented at the recent 2008 appreciation dinner. Volunteer recipients were, Rick and Judi Harper, the Angus MacInnis Award; Jim Brown, Docent of the Year; and Linda Beard, volunteer of the Year Award. Volunteer hours donated to the Culture and Heritage Museums in the last year totaled 3,788.
Elected to the 2008 to 2009 Guild board were Linda Poteat, president; Marilyn Hakim, vice-president; Ellen Newton, secretary; Ray Weiss, treasurer; Judi Harper and Suzanne Kirk, members-at-large.
Honored for 15 years of service were Annette Hull, Ellen Gillis and Joe Zdenek. Honored for 10 years of service were Bea Schilling, Betsy Loxterman, Joyce Sutton and Susan Benvield. Honored for five years of service were Barbara Brewer, Jean Nicholson, Linda Lathan and Ray Weiss.
Nuclear station workers donate to Pilgrims' Inn
Catawba Nuclear Station employees recently donated nearly 800 toiletry items and over $400 to Pilgrim's Inn and PATH, People Attempting to Help, as part of the station's volunteer program to support the community.
Arts Council of York County receives $9,000 from Earth Fare
Earth Fare donated $9,062.15, five percent of its total sales from its first three days of business, to the Arts Council of York County on July 16. Funds will be used for arts programming in York County.
Tega Cay Lions honor members for contributions
Several Lions were honored for their contribution to the City and the Lions Club recently at the Tega Cay Fourth of July ceremonies. The new community center in Tega Cay was named in honor of Philip T. Glennon. Other honorees were, Barbara Watts, Lion of the Year; and Bobby Cullen, Citizen of the Year.
John Fassler receives nephrology volunteer honor
Dr. John Fassler of Nephrology Associates received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina. Fassler served as chairperson of the first Tri-County Kidney Walk held May 22 in Rock Hill. The walk raised more than $64,000 for the National Kidney Foundation.
