Herald accepting school-supply donations through Friday

Complications with cancer and back pains cost Yvonne Howze her job, leaving her without a stable income. When school started last week, Howze was forced to send her children to school without supplies.

"I wasn't able to get them," Howze said. "They didn't have the tools they needed to be successful in school. That bothered me."

The Rock Hill woman has been unemployed since February, but she won't have to worry any more about school supplies, thanks to the ongoing school-supply drive hosted by The Herald and the Rock Hill school district.

The drive ends Friday. New school supply donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at The Herald, 132 W. Main St.

Organizers are seeking basic school supplies, such as notebook paper, pencils and crayons.

Last week's donations were delivered Monday to the school district administrative office, where organizers put together 12 boxes of supplies. Those supplies were distributed to needy students from 12 elementary and middle schools as well as a local neighborhood, district officials said.

But some Rock Hill students continue to lack school supplies, school district officials said. In addition to basic supplies, students need five-subject spiral notebooks, subject dividers and black-and-white composition notebooks. District officials and Herald Publisher Debbie Abels are appealing to the community to extend a helping hand.

"Thank you to all who donated supplies so far," Abels said. "It's not too late to donate. The difference you can make to a family is immense."

For Howze, the school supply drive means relief: Her children will have supplies because of the community's generosity.

"That's very nice," Howze said. "There's help out there."
