Grants to help agencies buy firefighting gear, stun guns

Federal grant money will deliver electric stun guns, firefighting gear and a better shooting range to some York County law enforcement and public safety agencies.

"These grants are a plus for York County and a good example of how the federal government helps out at the local level," said U.S. Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., chairman of the House Budget Committee, who announced the awards.

Rock Hill

The city earned two grants from the U.S. Department of Justice. A $24,703 grant will help Rock Hill Police extend a target shooting range from 25 to 50 feet and buy mobile data terminals.

A $150,000 grant will bolster the city's "Weed and Seed" project, comprised of the Hagins-Fewell, Sunset Park, Crawford Road North, Flint Hill and South Central areas. This is the site's third federal award for a program that weeds out criminals and provides social services.

York County

The county secured a $22,135 grant to help the Sheriff's Office upgrade its computers and buy cameras and electric stun guns.

The York County All On Board coalition landed $125,000 from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy to support the group's efforts to reduce substance abuse among York County young people.

Bethel community

The Bethel Volunteer Fire Department near Clover got $79,325 for training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment and upgrades to fire stations and facilities.
