Churches to distribute food in McConnells area
Four churches in the McConnells community will sponsor the Second Harvest Partners food giveaway at 11 a.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church on McConnells Highway.
Representatives from North Central Medical Center will be there to do blood pressure checks and glucose screenings. Maggie Robinson is the site coordinator for Mount Zion.
Other sponsoring churches are Bethlehem First Presbyterian, Great Joy Baptist and Mount Do-Well Baptist.
Second Harvest Partners is a cooperative ministry of Providence Presbytery and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Twelve churches in York County have joined the ministry, and food distribution sites are scheduled through November 2008.
The first site was hosted by Foundation AME Zion Church in Lesslie, where more than 500 people were served in May.
Volunteers from all area churches are welcome. For more information, contact Dot Killian at (803) 517-7870 or dot@providencepres.org.; or Brother David Boone at (803) 487-5448.
Rock Hill police official dodges fleeing truck
A Rock Hill police official was nearly hit by a fleeing suspect's vehicle during a two-county chase today that ended when a Clover man wrecked a stolen pickup truck in Chester County, officials said.
Michael Scott Reneke, 23, of Clover was hospitalized in Chester County, said Lt. Jerry Waldrop of the Rock Hill Department. Officials at the Chester hospital declined to release Reneke's condition.
He faces several charges including assault and battery with intent to kill, driving under a suspended license and reckless driving, Waldrop said.
Around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, authorities tried to stop Reneke for a noise violation because of the volume of the radio in the pickup truck, Waldrop said. Police stopped the pursuit but later continued after a woman said she was almost hit by the truck. She told police the truck was in the Highland Park subdivision.
Waldrop approached the truck, identified as stolen, when it stopped in a cul-de-sac. Then Reneke "gunned" the pickup truck, Waldrop said.
"I had to jump back into my car, slamming the door as he passed within inches of my vehicle," said Waldrop, who was not hurt.
Reneke wrecked in Chester, Waldrop said. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
Hanna cost S.C. tourism industry $22 million
CONWAY -- A new study by Coastal Carolina University says Tropical Storm Hanna dealt a $22 million blow to the South Carolina tourism industry.
Taylor Damonte with the school's Brittain Center for Resort Tourism says occupancy rates fell significantly, from 70 percent in 2007 to 28 percent for the same September weekend. The study estimates that the storm caused more than $10 million in losses for the lodging sector alone.
Researchers say Hanna also cost coastal governments around $710,000 in taxes and fees.
Hanna made landfall near the North Carolina state line early Saturday. The storm causes little physical damage in the Carolinas.
