Rogers opens Republican bid for District 49

Marvin Rogers kicked off his Republican bid for the state House on Monday night with a promise to put the needs of District 49 above allegiance to any political party.

“I am beholding a coalition for change here at All Stars restaurant tonight,” Rogers told 40 supporters at the Saluda Street restaurant.

Rogers, 32, faces Democrat John King in the Nov. 4 election to succeed Bessie Moody-Lawrence in District 49, which represents most of southeastern York County and areas toward McConnells.

Rogers once worked in the district office of U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis, R-S.C. He’s been involved in a number of outreach agencies, including Interfaith Hospitality Network and Head Start.

If elected, Rogers said he would work to bring a small business incubator and community development credit union to south Rock Hill as a way to recruit more small businesses.

His candidacy won support from Kashaka Kikelomo, director of the York County First Steps program. “Marvin has boots on the ground,” he told listeners. “He’s in the community.”

Suspension upheld for ex-Tega Cay magistrate

The state Supreme Court upheld a two-year suspended sentence for a former Tega Cay municipal judge who pleaded guilty to taking $17,000 from a law firm where she once worked.

Deborah Ann Koulpasis was given a two-year suspended sentence and paid $20,000 in restitution to the Gillen Law Firm, where Koulpasis worked as an attorney for nearly three years.

Koulpasis was let go from the Rock Hill firm in May 2005, police reports stated. The firm later found discrepancies in several deposits.
