YORK — A York woman facing eviction set fire to a pile of blankets inside a mobile home, causing thousands of dollars in damage, according to police.

Her plan, authorities say, was to burn the home and get aid from the American Red Cross.

Authorities on Wednesday charged Jacqueline Suzanne Cruz, 30, and James Allen Harris, 24, both of 1379 Edgefield Road, with second-degree arson and criminal conspiracy in connection with the fire Tuesday, according to reports from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the police report, a witness told officers that Cruz said she set fire to a pile of blankets inside the home around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Cruz told a witness, according to the report, that she was going to burn the mobile home to receive aid from the American Red Cross.

The fire caused more than $5,000 in damage, Hoffman said.

Bond was set at $7,500 each for Cruz and Harris. Both remained in custody Wednesday at York County Detention Center.
