YORK — A York man locked family members inside their house and refused to let them leave because he was upset that a stepdaughter did not “adequately clean her bedroom,” police say.

James Kevin Moss, 37, faces criminal domestic violence and three counts of kidnapping after police forced their way into his house Tuesday night. Police were alerted when a 14-year-old girl called and said her stepfather locked the front door and refused to let anyone leave the house on Black Highway, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

When authorities arrived around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, a female told police through a window that she could not open the door and requested that police force it open. Officers kicked the front door in and found Moss in the living room. The woman told police Moss was upset because one of his stepdaughters had not “adequately cleaned her bedroom.”

When the woman requested the key, Moss threw several items at her, including a remote control that struck her left arm, the report states.

Moss was in custody Wednesday at York County Detention Center.
