LANCASTER — A 31-year-old Lancaster man sought a ride with an 88-year-old man before leading him down a dead-end road, beating him in the face and robbing him, police said.
The man suffered facial injuries as a result of Friday’s assault, said Tom Holland staff attorney for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
On Tuesday, police charged Brian James Hinson of 1523 Virginia St., with strong-armed robbery, kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and several other charges related to the use of stolen checks and credit cards DOMara 10/8/08 forgery, financial transaction card theft; financial transaction card fraud and third or subsequent property crime in connection with the assault and robbery that happened Friday, Holland said.
If convicted on all charges, Hinson could face up to 76 years in jail, Holland said. A bond hearing is scheduled for this afternoon.
At about 3:30 p.m. Friday, a man approached the victim while he was in the parking lot of Founder’s Credit Union on Springdale Road.
“He asked if he could have a ride to get some gas because he had run out of gas and needed to see his wife,” Holland said.
The victim allowed the man to get in his pickup, Holland said.
“The man directs (the victim) down a dead-end road,” Holland said. “Then he tells him to give him his money. He hits him in the face, gets his money, hits him again and tells him not to call the police.”
The man fled with about $200 as well as the victim’s checkbook and wallet, which contained several credit cards, Holland said. The victim drove home and called police before returning to Lancaster for treatment at Springs Memorial Hospital, Holland said.
“He broke his nose and a bone in his face,” Holland said. “He was admitted to the hospital and stayed at least one night.”
Meanwhile, the man’s attacker began shopping.
“He used the credit cards Friday and Saturday,” Holland said. “Then he tried to cash a check on Monday. Some time after that police got a lead on him.”
Armed with search and arrest warrants, police on Tuesday went to Hinson’s house.
“We ended up kicking in the door,” Holland said. “He was in a bedroom.”
Authorities found several of the victim’s items at Hinson’s house, Holland said. They also found more of the victim’s items with some of Hinson’s property at another location, Holland said.
Hinson has been on probation for several burglary charges when the latest incident occurred. His criminal history reflects multiple charges ranging from fraudulent check, petty larceny and stealing dogs, to burglary, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.
Hinson remains in custody today at Lancaster County Detention Center.
