closeYORK -- A York teen who ran out of gas at a local park after playing basketball was shot Sunday evening at the park, police said.
The teen’s name will not be released because of his age. He was taken to a Rock Hill hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh, York Police Chief Bill Mobley said.
The teen's status was not immediately available this morning.
No arrests have been made in the shooting that happened at Lincoln Park located on Lincoln Road less than two miles from downtown York, he said.
Sunday’s incident marks the second shooting in a week for the York community.
On Oct. 5, police responded to a Blackburn Street laundry, where they found Ernest Tolbert, a 63-year-old city sanitation employee, lying on the ground in front on the business with a fatal gunshot wound. No arrest has been made in that case.
“We seriously doubt this has any tie-in with the homicide,” Detective John Naylis said.
Around 7 p.m., the male victim and two others were at the park, according to a report from the York Police Department.
“The victim and two others were playing basketball,“ Naylis said. “Apparently, the victim ran out of gas and was waiting for somebody to bring him some.”
The victim and two other teens were putting gasoline in a Dodge Stratus when several vehicles pulled into the parking lot, the report notes.
"About six individuals got out (of the cars)," Mobley said. "They had a small conversation. Then one of the individuals pulled out a weapon and fired. He struck the victim in the leg.”
Authorities do not know what the men talked about prior to the shooting, Mobley said.
The report notes three to five shots were fired at the newly revamped city-owned park.
"There was a man and his son who were in the park when all this went down," Mobley added. "When the shooting started, they ducked."
That witness told police that a black male fired several shots in the direction of the victim before the shooter and others left in a light green Audi and a blue Jeep Cherokee heading toward North Congress Street, according to the report.
