YORK -- A York man will spend two decades in prison after a jury found him guilty of shooting at a car of men in what authorities called a "turf shooting."

After a three-day trial, a jury on Thursday found Marquis Deporris "Bucket" Roylonza Mackins, 19, guilty of four counts of assault of a high and aggravated nature and discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, said 16th Circuit Assistant Solicitor E.B. Springs.

A judge handed down a 20-year sentence Thursday in the July 30 shooting near York's Hall Street apartments, according to a press release issued Friday from the solicitor's office.

"I wish he could have gotten more years," Springs said. "He had terrorized that area."

Melvin Roberts, Mackins' attorney, was unavailable for comment Friday.

This was the second time Mackins was tried for the shooting. An October trial resulted in a hung jury.

Around 10:30 p.m. July 30, four Chester men pulled into the apartment parking lot to visit some women.

"He felt like that was his turf," Springs said of Mackins. "It was made clear in court that he didn't like men from Chester coming to see women in his neighborhood."

The release states that witnesses said they saw Mackins pull an AK-47 from the trunk of his car before saying he was going to "let loose some fire." Meanwhile, the Chester men got in their car and backed out to leave as Mackins fired.

In the parking lot, the shooting caused chaos.

"There were kids playing," he said. "They scattered, terrified and screaming."

No one was hurt during that shooting, but five bullets hit the car, Springs said. Bullet holes were found in two other vehicles in the parking lot. Police recovered the weapon and about nine shell casings on the sidewalk.

Mackins originally was charged with four counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. On Thursday, the jury rendered a guilty verdict to lesser charges of assault of a high and aggravated nature.

Mackins remained in custody Friday at York County Detention Center.
