“Hard times have a way of making all of us realize what’s really important in our lives. Amid job losses, plunging retirement funds and uncertainty about the future, we asked Herald readers to reflect on this Thanksgiving Day. We asked readers to share what you are most thankful for — and to tell us how your life experiences have shaped that perspective.

“My grandparents, Frank and Mabel Jennings, raised six girls, with my Mom being the second oldest. She was the first married, then had me as the first grandchild so I was very close to those five aunts! Growing up I spent my summers visiting them after they were married in Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Charleston, and my favorite place, the Isle of Palms. When our Nanny and Grandaddy were living, they would pack up the cousins to head home for holidays so I am still close to my cousins even now when we have our own families.

“But, this time last year I decided that my girls did not know my wonderful aunts like they needed to. They needed to hear all of the tales of the six Jennings girls growing up in Ebenezer and going to Winthrop Training School like I had when I was younger. So after much planning and scheming, we got all six of the girls down to Edisto Beach for a week in June for the family vacation of a lifetime. We had aunts, uncles, and cousins spending countless hours laughing, talking, sitting on the porch, walking on the beach and making so many more happy family memories to treasure and be forever thankful for.” — Becky Faris, Rock Hill

“I am so thankful for my family but also, just as important, I am thankful for my pastor and church family at Gospel Light Baptist Church. I am so thankful that I can go to a church that “loves on” one another, prays together, cries together, and seeks God’s will for their lives. I am especially thankful that I have the freedom to attend church of my own choosing. I am also thankful that I have a church family to pray with to get us through these trying times. The Lord has blessed us and our church and I am truly thankful for that.” — Tammy Lauck, Rock Hill

“First, let me be thankful that I have so very much to be thankful for. Thankful for my family and friends. Thankful that most family and friends overlap. Thankful for being born, thankful again for being born in the USA. Thankful for being given life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, all wrapped in a blanket of citizenship. Thankful for our democracy and all the freedoms it provides. Thankful to the veterans who have preserved all the above for me.

“Thankful for our schools, administrators, teachers, coaches and all who work within the education system. Thankful for all for giving me hope and courage from 6 to 60.

“Thankful for the memories made, the parades, the homecomings and reunions.

“My Boonville High School coach, Dr. Ed Lakey, played football at Appalachian State University in the fifties. I did the same in the 60s. Thankful I am for the special pregame moment together when we walked out on the ASU field together for the first time in September 2008.

“Thankful for all the sports and life lessons that come with them. Forty-five years ago, my high school football coach called, made an appointment and took me to be treated by his friend, James Shipe, D.C. That was my introduction to the art and science of chiropractic healthcare. This football season this same event repeated itself when a friend of mine called, made an appointment and brought his young player for treatment. I am thankful for both experiences and friendships that resulted.

“Thankful for pets and all the love and joy they give so freely.

“Thankful for having a 401k. All 401ks went down, however, all did not have one and have suffered more.

“Thankful to have been a part of the history this free country made in the 2008 election.

“Thankful for 17 years in Rock Hill. Thankful for the thousands of friends and patients. Thankful for the overlap. Most are both. Thankful for the 1000’s of referrals.

“Thankful for the 16th annual Cheer for Children. Thankful for the thousands of children who are given hope and courage. Thankful for the thousands of volunteers, donors, and supporters who have been a part of it all.

“Thankful for the gifts of time, energy, talent and money.

“Thankful for my church and church family.

“Thankful for my health.

“Thankful for God, country and family.

“Thankful for the trust … the ultimate currency.

“Thankful it is your trust that makes me rich.”
