In the quest to create a pedestrian-friendly feel across from Winthrop, credit McDonald's for taking a key early step.

McDonald's plans to demolish its building on Cherry Road and put up a new one with outdoor seating, more landscaping and a smoother traffic pattern, city planning records show. The old building went up in 1976.

"Right now, it's pretty much a car world there," said Bill Meyer, the city's director of development services. "We're trying to make it a little more pedestrian-friendly for people to walk in off Cherry Road."

The new building will stand closer to the road. It will still be one-story, but parking spaces out front will be replaced by a patio area.

The Golden Arches also will get a new spot. Plans call for the pole-mounted sign to be replaced with a ground-level, monument-style version that meets signage rules on Cherry Road.
