Sims Foundation awards $2.3M in grants to agencies for low-income assistance

The J. Marion Sims Foundation has granted 11 health and wellness organizations in York, Chester and Lancaster counties a total of about $2.3 million to assist low-income residents with medical care and other basic needs.

Organizations that received awards are:

• CareNet, $818,456 over 18 months to start up and operate a community health center.

• Chester County school district, $159,410 over three years to support a social worker position for area high-risk youth.

• Children's Attention Home, $34,857 over two years to support health and wellness programs for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the area.

• Family Connections of South Carolina, $6,800 over two years to support families with special-needs children.

• GoldenCare, $135,330 to purchase two ADA-approved vans to transport patients.

• Good Samaritan Medical Clinic, $42,000 for one year to increase health-care services through the free medical clinic.

• HOPE in Lancaster, $920,000 over two years to help qualifying Lancaster residents to meet basic needs, including food, shelter and heat.

• Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center of the Blind, $5,000 for one year for facility renovations.

• Safe Passage, $106,848 for one year to operate its battered women's shelter in Lancaster.

• United Citizens Club of Heath Springs, $47,575 for one year for upgrades to strengthen capacity.

• Winthrop University, $6,500 for one year for the Certificate in Nonprofit Management program for local nonprofit organization administrators.
