Updated 07/23/08 - 5:51 PM | A judge denied bond for Donavan Lamar Barber in connection to the shooting of Ricky Price. Price of Rock Hill was taken on July 15 with multiple gunshot wounds to Piedmont Medical Center before being transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was discharged last Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said. But he braved constant pain to attend court Wednesday. Attending, he said, was just that important. “I could have been dead and gone, and he could have still been out here walking free on these streets,” Price said after court. Barber of 358 Catherine St. faces multiple charges, including assault and battery with intent to kill, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a violent crime, possession of a pistol by a person convicted of a violent crime and carjacking, the judge said. Barber’s charges stem from an incident that happened July 15 in the 700 block of Chestnut Street. Around 5:40 p.m., Price told police that he was flagged down near Walnut Street by a group of men who inquired about a lift kit, a device on Price’s white 1994 Chevy Caprice, according to a report from the Rock Hill Police Department. As Price talked with the group, an man with a black bandanna covering his face came from behind a house, pointed a pistol at Price and demanded that he “give it up,” the report notes. According to the report, Price tried to grab the pistol, but was shot in the groin area as well as in the right hip and left hand. The group left the area with Price’s car. It was located in front of 819 Walnut St., the report notes. A police dog was unable to track the man. Police arrested Barber around 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Lt. Jerry Waldrop of the police department. “We’re noticing a lot of these crimes are getting more violent,” Waldrop said. “Guns re being used and shots are being fired. People are being injured during assaults and robberies. We want to curve this type of activity and get the guns off the street.” The weapon used in last week’s shooting was not recovered, Waldrop said. Barber’s first court appearance is slated for Sept. 2, the judge said. If convicted, Barber could receive up to a 80-year prison sentence, the judge said.
