closeROCK HILL -- Mrs. Essie McMoore Barnette, 89, of 1224 Calhoun St., Rock Hill, S.C., died July 1, 2008, at Piedmont Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 25, 1919, in York County to the late Hillard McMoore Sr. and Sally Barber McMoore. She attended York County Public Schools and retired from Winthrop College. She was a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church. She was a member of Catawba Chapter 291 O.E.S., Daughter of Isis No. 153, Hillard McMoore Order Of Golden Circle No. 104, Heriones of Jericho No. 5 and APB Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James " J. C." Barnette. She is survived by sons, James C. Barnette Jr., Charles Barnette Sr., and Lorenzo Barnette Sr., all of Rock Hill and Steven Barnette of Edgemoor, S.C.; daughters, Donetta B. Smith, Clementine B Mitchell and Angela Barnette, all of Rock Hill and Brenda Barnette of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Helen C. Hunt of Bowie, Md.; 38 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great grandchildren; four great-great-great-grandchildren; her companion, Pippie of the home; children she raised, Anthony Caldwell of Anchorage, Alaska, Vincent Barnette and Tabitha Lee Benjamin, both of Rock Hill, Arnissa Berry of Maryland and Miranda Barnette of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 5, 2008, at Mount Hebron Baptist Church. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the church, with the Rev. Larry L. Robertson officiating and the Revs. Lavenia D. Pride and J. Thomas Barber assisting. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.
