Rev. Joseph Tysinger Sr.
LAKE WYLIE -- The Rev. Joseph E. Tysinger Sr., 80, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville, N.C.The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill, S.C., with the Rev. John L. Warren Jr. and the Rev. Doug Chambers officiating. Burial will be private.
Born in Charlotte, N.C., Rev. Tysinger was a son of the late Jasper Howard Tysinger and Wilma Helms Tysinger. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Rev. Tysinger worked for Celanese Corporation before becoming a minister in 1954. A graduate of Columbia College, he was a minister for the United Methodist Church, having served in many churches in South Carolina. At the time of his death, Rev. Tysinger was the Associate Minister of St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill, S.C., where he received the title "Pastor Emeritus" in 2006. He was also the recipient of the G. Ross Freeman Award by the S.C. State United Methodist Men.
Surviving are his wife, Betty W. McQuay Tysinger; his sons, Terry E. Tysinger and his wife, Joan, of Taylors and Roger E. Tysinger and his wife, Sue, of Columbia; his sister, Virginia Reid of Anderson; his stepson, Terry L. McQuay and his wife, Linda, of Marvin, N.C.; stepdaughters, Leslie Klein and her husband, Fred, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kimberly McGee of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen Neal Tysinger and a son, Rev. Joseph E. Tysinger Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 22, 2008, at St. John's UMC Fellowship Center in Fort Mill.
