ESTILL -- Mrs. Margaret Solomons Goettee, 88, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Doctor and Mrs. Woody Livingston in Rock Hill, S.C.
A native of Estill, Mrs. Goettee was the widow of Oliver Ennis Goettee and daughter of Robert Henry Jr. and Demaris Folk Solomons. She was born at Redland Plantation in lower Allendale County, S.C., on Aug. 24, 1920. She graduated from Estill High School and Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga.
Mrs. Goettee taught in the public schools of Hampton and Jasper Counties and served a term as president of the Hampton County Teachers Association.
A life long member of Lawtonville Baptist Church, she worked with the junior organizations and served as president of the Women's Missionary Union. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy and she is a life member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. Mrs. Goettee was a charter member of the Hampton County Historical Society and served as the first secretary. She was also a member of the South Carolina Historical Society and the South Carolina Archives and History.
Mrs. Goettee was a long time member and past president of the following clubs: Estill Music and Study Club, Estill Reading Club and Yellow Jessamine Garden Club. She was also a member of the Social Dozen.
She resided at 254 Fifth St., Estill, S.C., and for 30 years maintained a home in Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Surviving are her daughters, Margaret (Mardee) Demaris Brooks and son-in-law, Joseph Paschal Brooks, of Atlanta, Ga., and Linda Laura Livingston and son-in-law, Wilbur (Woody) Dubose Livingston Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C.; her grandchildren, Paschal (Susan) Brooks of New York, N.Y., Demaris Brooks of Atlanta, Ga., Austin (Camille) Livingston of Houston, Texas, Robert Livingston of Charlotte, N.C., and Elliott Livingston of Hampden Sydney, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Henry Gifford.
Visitation will be at the Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home Chapel in Hampton, S.C., today, Aug. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Lawtonville Baptist Church in Estill, with a short graveside service immediately following the funeral at Lawtonville cemetery.
