Two programs to make York Tech transfer to Winthrop easier

- cmullins@heraldonline.com

Two new programs will help York Technical College students transfer “seamlessly” to Winthrop University, officials from both schools said.

The programs, which were implemented this fall, will cut down on duplicated coursework that often becomes a problem when students are accepted from York Tech to a four-year degree program at Winthrop.

Leaders from both schools teamed to offer the University Studies Certificate program, which allows York Tech students to complete one of 21 designated bachelor's degrees — ranging from science communication to modern languages — by transferring 31 to 32 credit hours to Winthrop's corresponding program.

Under the second transfer program, called 2+2, York Tech students who complete the Associate of Arts or Science degrees can transfer 63 to 65 credit hours to Winthrop in five areas of study:

A.A. to B.S. in Business Administration

A.A. to B.A. in English-Language Literature

A.S. with Environmental Specialization to B.S. in Environmental Sciences

A.A. to B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences

A.A. to B.A. in Political Science

Winthrop might expand the agreements to other technical colleges, as well as add more certificates and programs, the university said.

“Over time, these agreements will contribute a great deal to the quality of life in a region,” President Anthony DiGiorgio said in a prepared statement, referring to the economic impact a bachelor's degree has on people and regions.

Greg Rutherford, president of York Technical College, said the programs “signify both institutions' commitment to advancing student success.”
