Three Winthrop University professors received awards during the commencement ceremonies.

Lorraine Gorrell, a retiring professor of music, received the distinguished professor award.

Gorrell has been at Winthrop for 34 years and is regarded as an expert in German art song and art song composers. The distinguished professor award is the highest honor for Winthrop faculty.

Gerry Derksen, an assistant professor of design received the outstanding junior professor award.

Derksen has played an active role in developing the design program since he arrived at Winthrop in 2001. One of his accomplishments was helping create a student design studio class that works on projects for a semester or a year.

Janice Chism, a professor of biology and director of the biology graduate program, received the graduate faculty award.

Chism’s work on developing a new graduate curriculum that included a non-thesis option helped increase enrollment in the program. She has been at Winthrop since 1989 and has been a graduate faculty member for 16 years.
