Muffins for Moms will be held from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. May 12 at the school. Finley Road SOS collected 85 pounds of cans for Earth Day last week. The club also will walk in the Izzy's Legacy Walk over Memorial Day weekend. The Terrific Kid ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria. Sarah Hicklin won at the state level National History Day competition at the South Carolina Archives last weekend and will represent the state in the National History Day competition, held at the University of Maryland, College Park, in June. HIGH Chester County Career Center Students who represented the school in SkillsUSA competitive events last month are: Shalanna Wright, second place in cosmetology; Jeremy Crank, second place in graphic communications; Ian Baertlein, third place in architectural drafting; Ben Bagwell, fifth place in precision machining technology; Jacob Bennett, who participated in screenprinting; Stephenie Glauser, who participated in job skill demonstration. Earlier winners in the state masonry competition were Kevin Hall, first place; Rawls Shirley, second place; and Eric Hooper, third place. Northwestern The band program earned the South Carolina Outstanding Performance Award for the 17th consecutive year at state competition last weekend. The award is presented to bands that exhibit superior performance in all areas: marching band, concert band, jazz band, region and all-state selections, solo and ensemble. Phoenix Academy April Students of the Month were: Lauren Bower, Taylor Adkins, Kiaesha McCoy, Eddie Guillen, Sharonda Culp, Jontavius Neely, Florian Haake and Sebastian Haake. Rock Hill The School Improvement Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center. The baseball awards ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria. The chorus spring concert "An Evening of Song" will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the auditorium. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from students or at the door. S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics Sarah Lancaster, a junior, mobilized more than 100 young people in York County to participate in the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day last weekend, the largest youth service event in the world. Through a Disney Minnie grant, Lancaster launched E5 Youth, a project targeting middle school students for community service opportunities based on their interests and abilities. South Pointe South Pointe in the News (SPIN) won the 2007-2008 South Carolina Scholastic Press Association Palmetto Award for its competing class at the annual SCSPA conference and awards day in Columbia. The paper also received an honorable mention for Most Improved Newspaper. SPIN artist Ren McFadden received a first-place award for best art in a scholastic newspaper. PRIVATE St. Anne Brittney Miles and Taylor Barnes were recently selected as 2008 Kim Martinson Scholarship winners. They were chosen for their academic records and essays on how St. Anne can prepare them for success in life. Zeke Edmonds will perform the lead role in "Honk Jr," Rock Hill Community Theatre's play based on "The Ugly Duckling," next month. Mom's and Muffins will be held Friday, with breakfast following morning community prayer at 7:55. Trinity Come-See-Me coloring contest winners were: Natalie Henderson, Adam Haynes and Madison Keen. Westminster-Catawba Ashley Collins and Molly Glibery scored a superior rating at the Solo and Ensemble Festival last month. Students who were recognized for their outstanding performances in the Association of Christian Schools International Math Olympics in Charlotte are: Hannah Basha, Stephen Thompson, McKenzie Walling, Liza Wilson, Robert Basha, Brittany Farrar, Bailey Oedewaldt, Trace Neal, Caleb McGill and Chloe Trexler, all for computing; Alex Travis, Rob O'Neal, Bailey Westbrook, Simeon Greene, Dae Bigach, Seth Roddey, Jake Cullum, Rebecca Horn and Pierce Jennings, all for reasoning. HOMESCHOOL Luke Anderson recently received the Honor Society Awards Scholarship, a $1,000 award. He was selected from 11,000 applicants for excellence in academics, leadership and community service and will be recognized in Washington, D.C., this month.
