Lynn Stephenson was remembered Thursday as a leader in many facets of Rock Hill civic life.
An overflow crowd of more than 800 filled the sanctuary and a chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, reflecting Stephenson's broad involvement in the town where she grew up.
Business executives shared pews with city government officials, leaders from Winthrop University and Northwestern High School and friends from the Junior Welfare League.
Some reached for tissues as they mourned Stephenson, who died Monday after complications from a blood clot. She was 43.
The family's pastor, the Rev. Shelton Sanford, offered words of support to Stephenson's husband, Will, and two children, Taylor and Wil, seated on the first row.
“There are so many people here who love you all,” Sanford said. “We grieve with you.”
The 45-minute service included hymns “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” “Amazing Grace” and “Blessed Assurance.”
Friends have lauded Stephenson for choosing a career in the male-dominated development business.
They also recall a mom who finished work in time to make it to her children's sports games and school events.
As president of Environmental Land Augmentation, Stephenson hoped to revitalize the Bleachery site, a former textile mill near downtown.
She was an avid Northwestern supporter and past president of the school's athletic booster club.
Noting Stephenson's habit of becoming a leader in any group she joined, Sanford wondered whether she had started giving out instructions in heaven.
“Faith now has become a reality for Lynn,” declared the Rev. Jerry Devinney in an invocation.
“She did not get cheated in this life,” Devinney said. “In fact, she was able to squeeze 80 years into 43…she made every moment count.”
After the service, long lines formed outside the sanctuary as friends waited to greet the family.
