What makes our church unique: Carmel and the Brainerd Institute for black students was founded by the Presbyterian Church USA. Brainerd was a boarding school for blacks, as there were no public schools for black students. While at school, students attended church at Carmel. The first ministers were white men who also taught and worked at Brainerd.
