Six-month-old Makaylah Graham has a birth defect so severe that doctors say she won't live to her first birthday. "She only has half of a brain," said Jo Kornegay, a Hospice of South Carolina nurse who is caring for Makaylah.
The family has relied on Hospice to manage Makaylah's care at home. But because of state budget cuts due to the plummeting economy, Medicaid patients, such as Makaylah, will lose their hospice coverage by the end of the month.
Operation Help One Another and the Rock Hill Galleria will be sponsoring a blanket and coat drive during the month of February. The daily drop-off location for coats and blankets will be Showmars, in the Galleria's food court.
Thousands of York County residents are eligible to get their taxes done for free. But many don't know it, a local aid agency says.
During the next three months, trained volunteers will set up at sites across the county to help families on a first-come, first-served basis. The service is offered by the IRS to households making less than $45,000.
Western York Count Relay for Life seeks participants
The March of Dimes present the 19th annual Look Who's Cookin' event form 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Baxter Hood Center. This year's theme is "Island Thyme". Cooks will be decorating their area based on the food being cooked. There are first and second place trophies for best decoration. Cooks will be competing for first and second place in the amateur and professional cooking contest. The public is invited to sample more than 30 dishes, participate in a live and silent auction and much more. Tickets are available at the door or at all Fort Mill and Rock Hill Burger King restaurants, March of Dimes or Hair by Stan and Company. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door.
York County Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 10th anniversary as a regional chamber and have its annual meeting tonight at the Baxter M. Hood Center in Rock Hill. The meeting will be presented by Wachovia Bank.
The Yorkville Players will present "Charlotte's Web," the stage adaptation of the novel by E.B. White. Performance dates are 3 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 18 and 8 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17.
