Chamber celebrating 10th anniversary tonight

York County Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 10th anniversary as a regional chamber and have its annual meeting tonight at the Baxter M. Hood Center in Rock Hill. The meeting will be presented by Wachovia Bank.

The open reception is at 6 p.m., followed by a dinner buffet, business program and the annual business awards presentation.

This year's anniversary celebration will feature a business program that will include the passage of the Regional Board of Directors gavel from 2008 Chair Wayne Wingate of Durango Bagel, to 2009 Chair Joe Versen of Versen Appraisals, a review of the Chamber's accomplishments in 2008 and a look toward its goals in 2009. The evening will also recognize honored members during the presentation of the annual business awards.

Local groups make plans for events

The following clubs and organizations have these announcements:

-- Northwestern High School band will have a fish fry from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the school, 2503 W. Main St., Rock Hill.

Tickets are available in advance at the school or at the door. Food is available for take-out or eat-in. Adults are $8 per plate and children10 and under eat free for eat-in only. For details, call 981-1989.

-- The Kiwanis Club of Rock Hill will be meeting at 12:30 p.m. today at the City Club of Rock Hill. The program will be provided by Walter Hardin, Winthrop University associate vice president for facilities management. He will discuss Winthrop's Master Plan.

-- The York Comprehensive High School Cougar Band will be attempting to break the "world record" at the 30th anniversary of their fish fry Saturday and Sunday.

Charles Plemmons has been head cook, chef and leader of this annual fundraiser since 1979. Boosters will be trying to get into the record books for "most fish plates served." Over the weekend, they will be serving more than 5,000 fish plates, which include fish, fries, hushpuppies, slaw and a drink.

-- The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 tonight in the media center at Belleview Elementary School, 501 Belleview Road, Rock Hill.

-- Nicotine Anonymous, a 12-step program for smokers and chewers meets every Friday from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. at the Serenity Club, 209 Grayson Road, Rock Hill. The only requirement is the desire to quit smoking. For additional information call 803-327-9610.

-- The South Carolina State Cosmetologist Association is hosting a seminar for licensing renewals for cosmetologists. The renewal class is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Motel 6 (formerly The Ramada Inn), 2640 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Please bring a black writing pen and two forms of identification, one form must be a government issued picture identification, and your cosmetologist license number. The seminar fee is as follows: Members of SCSCA pre-registration is $40 and $45 on-site, non-members pre-registration is $50 and $60 on-site. Classes are available at neighborhood centers

Boyd Hill Recreation Center, 1165 Constitution Blvd., offers these classes taught by Peggy Barbe:

-- Golden Girls is a class for ages 55 plus. The group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays beginning Jan. 20 to Feb. 24. Students bring projects to work on in a group setting with assistance. The cost for this class is $2.

-- Adult Ceramics will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays beginning Jan. 23 to Feb, 25. The group will learn how to create ceramic projects. The cost for this class is $2.

-- Porcelain Workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays beginning Jan. 24 to Feb. 26. Students can work on various porcelain projects with assistance. The cost for this class is $3.
