Thousands of York County residents are eligible to get their taxes done for free. But many don't know it, a local aid agency says.
During the next three months, trained volunteers will set up at sites across the county to help families on a first-come, first-served basis. The service is offered by the IRS to households making less than $45,000.
This marks the second year that the United Way of York County has promoted the program. Last year, volunteers filed 1,358 tax returns, a 60 percent increase over two years ago.
In earlier years, "they had volunteers available and no one there to have their taxes filled out," said Debbie Hayworth of the United Way. "We're trying to get the word out."
The AARP and various tax specialists also provide free services in various spots around the county.
A point of emphasis this year is the earned income tax credit, a provision open to families making less than $41,646.
The IRS estimates that 1 in 4 taxpayers fail to claim the credit, which could put as much as $4,824 into the pockets of families with two children.
"There's a whole lot of people who are unaware of it," Hayworth said. "That $3,000 may be what sees them through these difficult economic times."
The credit is the federal government's largest program benefiting lower-earning workers.
Call United Way's 211 information hotline with questions. Residents can call 211 or 866-892-9211 at any time. Help is also available in Spanish.
