In the spirit of the Valentine's Day season, several groups have these plans:
-- York Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a Valentine's Dance form 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Recreation Center. The dance is for fourth- and fifth-grade students. The cost is $2 with adult supervision or $4 without. Refreshments will be for sale. Details, call 803-684-3742.
-- B.R.O. Ministry of Out Pouring Ministries of Chester presents a Valentine Celebration: An Evening of True Love at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Union Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Dinner, dancing, spoken word and picture packages are available. Cost is $12 for singles and $20 for couples. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are available at the door. Details, call 803-374-3892.
-- The Carolina Chordsmen chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society will host a quartets singing Valentine's Day weekend. Quartets will be traveling through the area Friday and Saturday and will sing to for the man or woman of your choice. They will also present a rose and a personalized greeting card. Details, call Carolina Chordsmen at 803-329-5761. The Carolina Chordsmen meet at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Associated Reform Presbyterian Church, 201 E. White Street, Rock Hill. Monday is deadline for garden symposium
The Master Gardeners of York County will host the fourth annual Joy of Gardening Symposium on Feb. 21 at the Baxter Hood Center in Rock Hill. The theme is Greening Your Garden.
Master gardener Joe Lamp'l, host of ETV's "Garden Smart" program, will be the keynote speaker. His talk will be followed by three breakout sessions consisting of nine different classes so participants can design their day.
Presenters include Paul Thompson, a horticulture agent with the Clemson Extension Service; retired extension agent Henry Nunnery; Duane Clere, a specialist at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden near Belmont, N.C.; and Andy Cabe from Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia.
The $40 fee includes a buffet luncheon. A variety of vendors will be present and numerous door prizes will be awarded. Classes will be offered on lawn care, an all-season garden, soil improvement, outdoor lighting, vegetable gardening, butterfly gardening and more.

Various groups make plans for events
-- Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, FCCLA, will host a talent show at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at South Pointe High School. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
-- FCCLA and Applied Technology Center's Early Childhood Education class will host A Chance for Hope from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 on the South Pointe High School track. The event is an Autism Awareness Walk. Proceeds will benefit the Dalton Help Foundation and Autism research.
-- The Woman's Club of Rock Hill will host "Cruisin' Into Spring," a fashion show, at 6 p.m. March 12 in McBryde Hall at Winthrop University. Spring fashions will be provided by Christopher and Banks, Gregory's Formal Wear, Jos A. Bank, Steinmart and Bridal and Formal Gallery. The event will feature a silent auction, door prizes, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash wine bar. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by noon March 9. Fort Mill YMCA offering the following events
-- Community Health Screenings will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Ultrasound tests will be used to determine the risk of stroke due to carotid artery blockage, abdominal aoritic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease, atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis.
