Winthrop staff hosting First Amendment events

Winthrop University faculty members Justin Brown and KarenKedrowski have received a $5,000 grant for Winthrop University through the Liberty Tree Initiative, one of eight school nationally selected to receive this grant.

The Liberty Tree Initiative aims to increase awareness and appreciation among college students and campus communities about the five freedoms of the First Amendment. The campus will host a series of free public events through the fall semester as part of the initiative.

The events include:

Heather Weaver, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union Religion and Belief Program, will host “Religious Freedom and Public Education” at 11 a.m. today in Plowden Auditorium.

Faculty in the Winthrop English department, led by English professor Jo Koster, will host a banned book reading at 7 p.m. Monday in G01 Owens Hall.

A panel discussion on developments during the civil rights movement that are unique to South Carolina will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 in Plowden. Members of the Friendship Nine, who were jailed during a lunch counter sit-in in Rock Hill, have been invited.

A panel discussion on public apologies given by officials of Rock Hill to civil rights leaders will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in Plowden.

A tree planting, to symbolize the tree in Boston of 1765, where new American patriots gathered to voice the need for a country based on liberty, will be at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10. Location is to be determined.

Ken Paulson , president of the Freedom Forum and a former editor of “USA Today,” will discuss the First Amendment's role in protecting the free press at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in Carroll Hall.

Humane society, Clover lodge to host fundraisers

The Humane Society of York County will have a tool, furniture, yard and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 2036 Carolina Place Drive, Fort Mill. Proceeds will benefit homeless animals at the Humane Society. Details, call 803-802-0902.

Alpine Lodge 208 in Clover will have a barbecue and bake sale at 9 a.m. Saturday at the lodge on North Main Street. Plates include barbecue, slaw, buns and chips. The cost is $7 for a plate or a pound of barbecue. Details, call David Wallace at 803-222-3516.

Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church will host a tractor show at 9 a.m. Saturday. Barbecue and hash plates will be sold and the women of the church will host a bake sale. Music will be provided by the Hudson Family. Details, call Rusty Thomson at 864-545-6820 or Rick Sadler at 803-927-7028.

during Charlotte festival

Hayden Childress, a ninth-grade student at Westminster Catawba Christian School in Rock HIlll, will perform magic tricks at 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Freedom Park in Charlotte during Festival in the Park.

health fair, forum

A Senior Health Fair will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Boyd Hill Recreation Center in Rock Hill. The fair is free and open to the public. Vendors focusing on health and wellness will be available. Details, call Carolyn Snyder at 803-329-5626.

In honor of National Race Equality Week, Rock Hill's No Room for Racism Committee will host a forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in the City Council chambers. The forum is called “I am an American because...” and will feature local people who chose to become American citizens. Entertainment will be provided by the Emmett Scott Soul Steppers. Refreshments will be provided by Delta Sigma Theta, the International Center of York County, Old Town Bistro, Showmars and Thi's Place on Main.
